Transliteration of lyrics[edit]

A while I changed the transliteration system of the lyrics to DIN 31635. Johnsc12 reverted my edit and has been reverting my reverts to his edits. We're caught in a bit of an edit war. I explained my edits using the edit summaries and posted on his talk page, but he has not responded in either place. So I would like to see if he will respond here. Johnsc12, why have you been reverting my edits changing transliteration to DIN? Do you prefer the other transliteration system? Why?

And I don't know, if anyone is watching this page who has views on which transliteration system should be used, please give your opinions. — Eru·tuon 20:43, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, I haven't contributed in the edit war but this is an interesting issue. I don't know many people who can make out the meaning of the DIN symbols and i don't think the regular user would take the time to decipher these. While your efforts are appreciated i don't see why we can't write the transliteration in ALA-LC so the general WP user population can read it. Let's keep things simple. I prefer DIN over ALA-LC because it doesn't use digraphs and it assimilates the article to sun letters.

The system that Johnsc12 is reverting to is not exactly ALA-LC, though; for instance, in assimilating sun letters. The particular things I do not like about his system is that it merges prepositions and conjunctions with definite articles (wa-l-qalam -> wal-qalam) and moves final vowels to the next word and merges words with hyphens (sawti l-waṭan -> sawt-il-waṭan), and uses e (sabil-el-kamal). These characteristics of the transliteration make it difficult for those who are not good at reading Arabic to connect the transliteration to the Arabic-alphabet words.

I'd like to change to DIN, but Johnsc12 will probably continue reverting, and he does not respond to messages on his talk page. I don't know what the procedure is for dealing with that. So I'll just make hopefully innocuous changes that he will not object to. — Eru·tuon 17:17, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
