Translation[edit]

¡Oh Gloria Inmarcesible! is a poem written in the XIXth century in a very exotic style (even for its time) to say the least...that's why the english translation seems awkward. In verse VIII it's incorrect to link to the Virgin Mary article. This verse refers to a custom in ancient times when virgins cut their hair as a signal of mourning when their beloved died in battle. Also, I consider punctuation to be fine as it is. Please, don't change it just because. About the chorus, it's unnecessary to write it twice, even if it is sung that way. I'm not sure about the "themopilas brotando" in stanza IX. I think it might mean "Thermopylaes are breaking forth" rather than "thermopiles sprouting." The latter doesn't mean anything, does it? The former alludes to the ancient Greek battle in which the Persians come through a mountain pass, and could refer to the Battle of Angosturas. (?) It would parallel the Greek idea of Cyclops in the next line.

Also in that terribly esoteric stanza IX, maybe

"La flor estremecida mortal el viento hallando, debajo los laureles seguridad buscó."

literally means, "The trembling mortal flower, being found by the wind, sought safety under the laurels," and figuratively means, "Although humanly weak, when faced with adversity the patriots became heroes." Can you make the connection? or is it only in my imagination?

Gracias, creo que tienes toda la razón en lo de las termópilas y ya lo cambié. Respecto a lo de la flor, no estoy segura...cuando se dice, "la flor estremecida mortal el viento hallando," el adjetivo "mortal" debe referirse al viento, no a la flor, sino se diría, "la flor estremecida mortalmente". Además el verbo "hallando" tiene que referirse a cómo halla la flor al viento, y la única posibilidad es mortal (por ello la flor busca refugio). Rosa 19:58, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another thing, does anyone besides me has a problem with the word "inmarcesible" being translated as "unfading"? I'll explain, "inmarcesible" in spanish means "que no se puede manchar" while "unfading" means "que no se puede borrar o diluir", so it's basically kind of opposite...but I haven't been able to think of a better adjective to replace "unfading". I think "unfading" is fine. I understand "inmarcesible" as "que no se puede MARCHITAR." Unwithering, but unfading is more poetic. Who knows about the flower and the wind?? Yes, maybe it does mean "the trembling flower found the wind [to be] mortal [to the flower] and so sought refuge under the laurels." Whatever that means!! Yopienso 09:10, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar[edit]

"the one who died in the cross", verse 1; is that indeed how it should be understood in Spanish? As far as I am concerned, "on the cross" is what would be grammatically and logically correct.
