Merger discussion[edit]

Per concerns at Wikipedia:In_the_news/Candidates#RD:_Mya_Thwe_Thwe_Khaing, I think this article should be merged to the 2021 Myanmar protests. --Regards, Jeromi Mikhael 15:39, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests per my comments at ITN. This is a textbook case of WP:BLP1E. I'll note this is similar to the recent discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ashli Babbitt, which resulted in a deletion of that page and a redirect as the page did not have much significant info itself. AllegedlyHuman (talk) 15:50, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests It's just WP:BLP1E. Protesters are trying to create a martyr out of her (the coverage of the death/killing of a police officer is artifically supressed while her death is artifically magaphoned). There's no indication that the effort will be successful. For now at least, WP:IE applies. SSH remoteserver (talk) 18:00, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Restructure - Her death meets notability guidelines and has received wide domestic and international coverage. Said article should ideally be restructured along the lines of Death of Rebecca Zahau or Death of JonBenét Ramsey, which meet WP:EVENT but not WP:BLP1E, with a content focus on their deaths and aftermaths. Her death has been covered by all the major newswire agencies (AP, Reuters 1, Reuters 2, AFP, Kyodo).--Hintha(t) 18:35, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't an article about her death essentially that of the protest itself? We have articles like Killing of George Floyd because those events triggered unrest. I don't see her death being anything other than a single civilian casualty of the protests. It neither triggered nor led to anything (as of now). She's dead and reported in the news. By the same token, we'll have "Death of" articles about pretty much every living person with an article on Wikipedia. SSH remoteserver (talk) 19:10, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Note that George Floyd is an independent article. AllegedlyHuman (talk) 22:45, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly the point. He has had a lot of follow-up events from the killing. The lady here was notable for being a single casulty of the protests (which is no longer true). As more have died, coverage of her death is being wiped out. SSH remoteserver (talk) 17:10, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests It's a clear WP:BLP1E. CommanderWaterford (talk) 20:30, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests or restrusture per all of the comments above; it's a violation of WP:BLP1E. I do also agree with Hintha. Tucker Gladden 👑 23:25, 19 February 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tucker Gladden (talkcontribs) [reply]
  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests, also because of WP:BLP1E concerns. Ref (chew)(do) 23:57, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests WP:BLP1E, like all above. I want to admit that her death is quite notable, but there is a policeman who recently died in the protests - so, I don't believe her death is unique. MarioJump83! 00:22, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot find any Burmese or English sources corroborating the death of a police officer, aside from the military-owned Myawaddy News and Asia Times (which incorrectly notes the location of the other civilian casualty). Reports appear unconfirmed; Kyodo states "the military said..." while Reuters states "the army says..." Anyone else have more success? -Hintha(t) 04:14, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is why I have some concerns with merging (with me leaning towards restructure before deciding for merge afterall) because her death may might be more important than it actually was, and the possibility of what you said above. MarioJump83! 08:51, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to point out that NetBlocks has confirmed that that all Wikipedia servers have been blocked by Myanmar authorities (source), in case any Wikipedia users based in Myanmar would like to weigh in on this evolving matter. --Hintha(t) 03:44, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Two sources are more than enough. The problem is all other media sources have so far been unneutral. It was said during an official press conference with gruesome photos as evidence. But the Burmese media, rarely known for its professionalism, decided to stage an information blackout over his death (to give spotlight on the girl and create a martyr). You can also cite the press conference. SSH remoteserver (talk) 05:26, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Here is his official funeral. No journalist in attendence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPyDb3fTcVg . SSH remoteserver (talk) 05:41, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think it should be the opposite, shouldn't it? Redirect for now and create an article if she does become famous. We don't create articles hoping that they will become notable later. SSH remoteserver (talk) 05:16, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
SSH remoteserver, exactly. Honestly this should have been taken to AfD because of WP:BLP1E where the outcome could be to merge it. CommanderWaterford (talk) 09:26, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. By now, there's no chance that she'll get continued coverage as seven more protesters died yesterday. It's just one-day reporting cycle. SSH remoteserver (talk) 17:10, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We should not do this. See WP:CRYSTALBALL. AllegedlyHuman (talk) 14:08, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests. Clear case of WP:BLP1E and WP:NOTNEWS. sixtynine • whaddya want? • 05:49, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would support Restructure - merging into the main protest article may see the circumstances of the death being edited out over the course of time. Rather, renaming it to Death of Rebecca Zahau or Death of JonBenét Ramsey is more correct. Mr Tan (talk) 05:53, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge for now to the 2021 Myanmar protests. If her death created myriads of changes in the ongoing situation, we can easily create another page about her. Clear case of WP:BLP1E SunDawn (talk) 07:46, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Restructure - I think her death is well-known by media, not herself. So I think her death can be a single article. -- Wendylove (talk) 13:32, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Super duper strong opposition She can be mentioned in the article about the protests, but a separate article for her should go into more detail about her life. That would make most sense. Prins van Oranje 10:52, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Prins van Oranje, I think it would be helpful to have a look at our policy WP:BLP1E. CommanderWaterford (talk) 15:44, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
CommanderWaterford Yes I am aware of that policy, but then there are countless articles then which should be removed from Wikipedia, so I assumed it was not an enforced policy. My bad. Prins van Oranje 15:49, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just so you know: all policies are enforced. Still, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. AllegedlyHuman (talk) 15:53, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: As of today February 22, there are similar articles about this personality appearing in the Burmese and Portuguese languages. Considering the latest developments in content creation, I hope the Wiki community who have voiced their opinions previously to merge into the main protest article, will reconsider accordingly. (It feels sort of double standard to remove this article in English, yet keeping the Burmese and Portuguese articles.) Personally, my take is to restructure the article as "Death of Mya Thwate Thwate Kaing". Mr Tan (talk) 12:30, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is explicitly noted as an argument to avoid; see WP:OTHERLANGS. AllegedlyHuman (talk) 15:26, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or delete and redirect to 2021 Myanmar protests. BLP1E. If her death generates a significant follow up/or becomes a direct cause/rally point of subsequent protest actions in the future, like as seen at Death of Chow Tsz-lok, the redirect can be reverted and the article be updated with the necessary content. – robertsky (talk) 16:02, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to Killing of Mya Thwe Thwe Khaing. STSC (talk) 16:24, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Sorry for late, we could not access Wikipedia for many days because military junta banned Wikipedia. Mya Thwe Thwe Khaing is a national figure [1] of my country. Her death marked the beginning of a nationwide uprising. So rename the article as Death or Killing of Mya Thwate Thwate Kaing. Thanks Taung Tan (talk) 09:22, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge. I think this will look better as a part of 2021 Myanmar protests. Further it meets WP:BLP1E. Kammiltalk⟩ 15:40, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge I support the merging of this article with 2021 Myanmar protests as it meets WP:BLP1E and should be followed more regularly for other articles that meet this same critera. I also agree that the articles like this in Burmese and Portuguese should also be merged to be consistent. Jurisdicta (talk) 05:49, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
