Notability[edit]

With no disrespect intended to Paul Broussard, his family and friends, and the LGBT community I would like to ask whether this person is notable. The guidelines for victims under Wikipedia:Notability (criminal acts) says the following, "Victims of high-profile crimes do not automatically qualify as notable enough to have a stand-alone article solely based on their status as victims. Notability with regards to this is defined as satisfying some other aspect of the notability of persons guideline that does not relate to the crime in question. As such, a victim of a crime should normally only be the subject of an article where an article that satisfied notability criteria existed, or could have properly been created prior to the crime's commission. Thus, attempts at inclusion prompted by appearance in the press should not be excluded if notability can be otherwise asserted." In this case I don't think Paul Broussard meets the notability requirements outside of the context of his murder. Even if the crime itself is notable the article should be about the murder and not a biography of the victim. An example would be Murder of Kathryn Faughey. Note that in order for the crime to be notable, it must be covered on a national or global scope; a fact that is not necessarily established here by the cited references. I am refraining from taking this to an AFD for the moment in the hopes that my concerns will be addressed by someone more familiar with the topic and another solution found.Nrswanson (talk) 14:29, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How does the fact that he was murdered make him notable, or more so than the person itself? There are many killed every day and week, and even for the reasons similiar to him outside the country, that are simply not notable just because they happened to be in "controversial" circumstances (for lack of a better term). Why can he not be listed as a victim of violation against lgbt people in a section on the said relevant page. Lihaas (talk) 13:56, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Broussard is notable because his murder was one of, if not THE first anti-gay hate crime to receive widespread, national media coverage and attention, pre-dating Matthew Shepard's and Brandon Teena's.66.138.74.100 (talk) 00:06, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I have not contributed to this article and will not be doing so, but I have sporadically referred to it to familiarize colleagues with the event. At the time, as a Houston-area resident, I was sensitized to the incident in real time, not only because of local coverage, but also because it extended well past Houston's media coverage. While national television citations are not readily available at this time, there are other ways to corroborate this. By running a Scholars Portal (academic subscription database) query search on Broussard's name, a series of references which give mention to the novel significance of this incident appear from the likes of the New York Blade; Court TV (1996); and the following:

As the writer/editor of this entry, I've ceased to make entries on hate crimes on Wikipedia, because I realized that most of the people whose stories I wanted to document were not likely to meet the notability requirement. In fact, most of their stories were not covered and are not known beyond their locales.

My goal, initially was to add to Wikipedia some of the hate crime cases I was aware of but that were missing here. However, the only other option was to add short summaries to the Violence against LGBT People list. But my interest was in writing detailed narratives of the cases, incorporating as many articles as I could find.

So, I've since stopped participating at Wikipedia and have instead launched my own freestanding site where this entry, my other entries, and many others about cases that cannot be entered on Wikipedia can be found. I will not, however, offer a link to that site since I'm not sure to do so wouldn't violate some guideline seeing as how I created the site. But look up the LGBT Hate Crimes Projct if you're interested.

In fact, my one of my next entries will be about Kevin Hale, whose story I now see was removed due to notability guidelines.

I think this is clearly a notable event worthy of inclusion on Wikipedia, as it represents part of an ongoing struggle for homosexual equality and hate crime legislation.
