Meaning of Mortsel[edit]

I've heard it said, that the word 'Mortsel' came from the ancient times, meaning 'dirty hall' (Mort: 'dirty', and sel: 'zaal' or 'hall').

It appears Mortsel used to be known for having a large, dirty hall.
