Who said ratio unknown ? I haven't got it on-hand, but the ratio is specified in the official description. Also it was not designed as a 'separatist flag' but as the new national flag of West Papua, the flag was authorised in November and first raised next to the Dutch flag on 1st December 1961. The issue of full independence had been decided upon years before, there had been local elections across West Papua in 1959 and then in 1961 they elected a West Papua Parliament (or Raad in Dutch) which was installed as part of the Netherlands colonial government in May 1961. The West Papua Parliaments main duty was to design and implement full independence within ten years (i.e. anytime during 1960s they were ready).

As with East Timor in 1975 when they raised their own flag, Indonesia invaded within a few weeks. In East Timor this invasion was successful, but the multiple invasions of West Papua during December into February were defeated by the West Papuan villagers and naval force. The Papuan police and troops only had to take the prisoners away, on 2/Feb/1962 the New York Times runs a small article about West Papua asking the UN to assist return 52 Indonesian sailors from a torpedo boat which they'd had to sink.

===>Thanks for the info I wrote the article, and at the time, I didn't know the ratio - if you have more info, please feel free to add it. You are correct that the flag is not simply the flag of the OPM, but was recognized as the flag of that geographic region and the government of that region by the colonizing power. Are you a Papuan? Question[edit]

Is the link to Human Rights in Papua New Guinea legit? I'm not challenging the assertion, only that the link text is leaning... 68.39.174.238 08:58, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not quite sure. I think the person who added this was probably biased towards the Papuan side. You're welcome to fix the article if you want. --Khoikhoi 09:01, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stripes?[edit]

The description of the flag is incomplete: red vertical band, white star. It's as if the flag has a hoist but no fly! What about the stripes? How many are there & of what are they representative? 76.123.203.164 (talk) 14:49, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stripes Thirteen, horizontal, alternating blue and white, representing the thirteen Melanesian nations. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 15:31, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disavowed by Dutch authorities?[edit]

There is a sentence about the use of the Morning star for pro-independence: "...such an interpretation was disavowed by the Dutch authorities at its creation...". It seems a bit out of place, unsourced and generally smelling of POV rather than fact. If this remains unsourced, or I find evidence of the contrary, this should be removed or at least rephrased based on what actually happened. As far as I know, the flag was in fact created by the authorities to prepare the West Papuans for independence. Fedor (talk) 08:57, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
