Description[edit]

Lets start with Montagu, the best bet seems to be The Honourable Victor Alexander Montagu (1841–1915), godson to Queen Victoria. [1]

The whaler was a 27ft Type K whaler- ubiquitous in the RN betweem 1910 and 1970. It was available in the lengths 24ft and 27ft. It was clinker built. The mainsail was gunter rigged and the mizzen ketch rigged. It had a drop keel. It was rowed by 5 oarsmen + a cox. It was partially succeeded by the 3-in-1 whaler with the same rig but carvel built. It had a inboard petrol engine and a screw.

Other earlier varieties had a fore mast and main

Media- it is seen in the The Battle of the River Plate (film).

One can be seen on the mezzanine floor of Slip #2 at Chatham Historic Dockyard. Photo to follow
