Rewrite[edit]

Current page is omissive to the point of idiocy, and the IMDB copied credits are full of errors. Anyone who thinks they're up to the task may wish to use Ben's posts on the subject as a springboard. --zippedmartin 17:19, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you can do better, start writing something. Federico Pistono 12:31, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
eheh, yes, I know I'm asking for a {{sofixit}} here. --zippedmartin 16:15, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are many unnecessary links. If someone rewrites, make sure keep them to a minimum. Agrilledfish 01:51, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with above. The page is in need of a full rewrite. The plot and character descriptions are redundant. Only the plot needs to be explained, not a specific paragraph about everyone. There are also two unneeded pictures at teh bottom of the page (the escaping whale picture can be kept). 70.129.201.82

Conserning the edit, I'm curious why the music director, Watanabe is so important to this movie that the bottom of the page has a "other works by Watanabe" as if this was his movie. I know he did Bebop and all, but shouldn't that list of stuff he's done be reserved for works that he directed, not just did the music direction for? Else, shouldn't we have a box for everyone involved in the movie? That'd be ridiculous. Brend0 08:22, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Mindgame004.png[edit]

Image:Mindgame004.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:17, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plot synopsis[edit]

Is it me or is it too long and unnecessarily detailed? For example taking an entire paragraph to explain the relationship between the senior yakuza and the girls' mother, and being overly descriptive about the characters(The yakuza boss is "a large man, rich, wearing several rings and gold necklaces, stroking a little pet in a huge business office"). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.76.224.26 (talk) 07:09, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, and i've been working on an improved version (as I watch the movie :P) which I shall upload shortly.

There we are, it still has problems, but is a LOT more accurate than the previous version  :/.

Manga Impact[edit]

Manga Impact: The World of Japanese Animation, 6 December 2010, ISBN 978-0714857411; pg 161:

Mind Game is an adaptation of a manga by Robin Nishi and the brainchild of director Yuasa Maasaki. The film, produced by Studio 4°C, tells the story of a reclusive young man, Nishi, who has fallen deeply in love with his childhood companion Myon. When they meet in a local cafe, two yakuza thugs arrive, a scuffle ensues and Nishi is brutally murdered. The action then shifts to the afterlife, where Nishi negotiates a return to his body and a reversal of time. He returns just before his death and, through a swift maneuver, grabs a gun and kills the gangster who was to kill him. Nishi, Myon and her sister steal the yakuzas' Cadillac and go on the run, Nishi high on the adrenaline of dying, beating God, and becoming the hero. A sudden twist of the wheel sees them drive off the edge of the highway into the sea and, at that very moment, a huge whale rises out of the water to swallow them and their car in one gulp. In the belly of this whale, they meet an old man, and, in the process of becoming reconciled to their fate, confront their own personalities and inner demons.
An avant-garde directorial approach was needed to best explore the surreal world of the original manga and Mind Game is distinguished by its striking visual style, which could be described as having a 'collage' aesthetic. Photographic elements intermingle with traditional anime methods and direct animation; keyframed sequences combine with straight-ahead animation - the overall effect is a constantly shifting and emotionally resonant world of subjective views and twisting bodies. This aesthetic marries well with the changing narrative expectations that emerge in Nishi's manga.

Themes[edit]

Turning back time[edit]

  • the old-fashioned cartoon "time boy" who can turn back time. Also appears on the case of drugs the old man used.
  • Nishi turning back time to before he gets shot.
  • At the end of the movie, Myon doesn't get her leg caught in the door of the train, and the Yakuza is left behind (and so doesn't follow her to the restaurant and they would never have gone on the adventure).
  • In a previous version of the article the plot says:
  • "It is later shown that [the senior Yakuza's] lover, the girls' mother, is waiting at a train station, implying that she plans to go far away somewhere and start a new life for herself. In the first timeline of the movie, he decides not to join her, but in the second timeline created by a change of events at the end of the movie, it is shown that he decides to go be with her after all."
  • As they are escaping the whale there is a "montage,[...] showing some of the many possible futures for each of the four characters. "
I don't know about the accuracy of this interpretation. Thoughts? —Msmarmalade (talk) 21:49, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Your life is the result of your own decisions"[edit]

  • on a mobile screen in the train station in the first scene of the film.
  • on a billboard during the first (and last?) montage
