Coat of arms

The steer head seems to ba relict from the high-middle-ages. A speciality about heraldic symbols of that period is the existens of two different traditions. On the one side we have the heraldic-system from the west, where the cote of arms (Wappen) was given to a heir of titles and rights, on the other hand was an archaic tradition of personalized sysmbols - mostly animals or phantastic beeings (dragons a.s.o.). Coming back to mecklenburgs steer-head, on has to admit the disambiguation of it. A very common explanation is to be found in the `Doberaner Anthyr-Lied´ (from the early 17.Jh.) and says that it is a relict from the hero Anthyr (the first mecklenburgican, sic!) who was coming home from his conquests with Alexander the great. The latter, whose horse was called `bukephalos´ (steerhead!) send Anthyr back to his home on the expedition of that Admiral Nearchos on the ship `bukephalos´. There es a rhymed-chronick about the mecklenburgical dukes from the 14th. century, but i think the explanation is the same.--85.177.21.164 (talk) 22:23, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Early History

Celtic people never settled so far north. Indeed, they never settled north of the northern part of Frankonia, Bohemia and in the west north of the Eifel mountain range.
