Merge Mary of Rome here.[edit]

Since there is nothing more that can be said about Mary of Rome than that she was mentioned, and has been speculated to be the same Mary as Mary, mother of John Mark (even though this speculation is generally rejected), merging the article here would resolve the permastub at the other title, and provide a slight bit of additional information to this article. Don't Merge: All identifications with another Mary is conjecture with basically nothing to go on. If anything, she should be merged to Epistle to the Romans or Romans 16, the chapter article she appears in. Str1977 ^(talk) 20:34, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Don't Merge: As Str1977 correctly says, it's mere speculation to connect this Mary to any other Mary. My own preferred merger - if any - would be into New Testament people named Mary#Mary, mother of John Mark, where she already has her own section. Hmmmm, okay I may not have been clear what I meant: I think that this article can be merged into New Testament people named Mary#Mary, mother of John Mark, and that Mary of Rome can be merged into New Testament people named Mary#Mary of Rome. Apart from the fact that you and I agree that this article shouldn't be merged with Mary of Rome, because they were most likely two different people, so little is known about these two persons that I think it's questionable whether they should even be given their own articles. The New Testament people named Mary article provides a good introduction and context to raise readers' awareness of the problematic nature of speculative identification of barely-known Marys in the New Testament, before analysing them case by case. Given that there is only minute information about either of these two Marys, the alternatives are not mutually exclusive. My proposal would be:

Retain the sections for these two Mary in the New Testament people named Mary. But I wouldn't redirect the two links to the Marys article as both Marys exist primarily in their own contexts. Hence:
include all information about Mary, mother of John Mark into John Mark and redirect the former link to the latter.
include all information about Mary of Rome into Romans 16 and redirect the former link to the latter.
List both Marys under the list "Mary (first name)" and link directly to John Mark and Romans 16, respectively. Not every person listed in such name articles need to have their own article.
