Photos added, please add captions[edit]

I've added some photos of Mackay as seen from a helecopter en route to the Whitsundays. I have absolutely no idea what I was looking at, and I only know it was Mackay because that's what it said on my ticket, and at the airport as I passed through. So, if you know what any of the photos are showing, I encourage you to please add a caption describing it, because I honestly have no idea! -- All the best, Nickj (t) 05:19, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added captions. As a long time local I've got no problem identifying the locations! Sequential photos where it's obvious the same subject is being show have just been captioned once. Pretty good photos by the by. Bilious 03:16, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

James Starr?[edit]

I've removed the wikification referring to James Starr. I can't find any suggestion that Texan comissioners were re-allocating plots in frontier Australia anywhere else, so I've removed the wiki-reference. My guess is that ours is not the same James Starr.

Article quality[edit]

Am I the only one who thinks this reads more like a tourism brochure than an encyclopedia entry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.109.29.53 (talk) 05:17, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't read many tourism brochures, but I don't see what is wrong with the article. Do you have any specific improvements or suggestions to make? Or do you have problems with anything in particular that could be discussed? 220.236.57.219 (talk) 05:03, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Climate and 2008 floods[edit]

The second paragraph of Climate, at the time of writing this, suggests that the clean-up is still in progress. Does anyone have a date we can attach to this? I'd hate for someone who knows nothing about the floods to visit the article in 2013 to think that the clean-up is still in progress... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.236.57.219 (talk) 05:07, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List for suburbs[edit]

Instead of listing the suburbs on this page I prefer the idea of creating List of Mackay suburbs like List of Gold Coast suburbs and List of Brisbane suburbs articles. Any objections? - Shiftchange (talk) 22:23, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Michellecrisp (talk) 00:15, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Climate[edit]

Subtropical? Mackay is clearly in the tropics. 121.223.70.80 (talk) 01:29, 31 December 2010 (UTC) Actually Mackay is subtropical.[reply]

Bluewater Lagoon[edit]

Why is the waterpark not mentioned in this article? Its set to be a major tourist attraction, it should be in there somewhere! I might be able to get some photos tomorrow. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.166.182.96 (talk) 07:43, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you can provide some reliable sources to prove it's a major tourist attraction, then it can be included. Michellecrisp (talk) 07:52, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

How is the name pronounced? Like "McKay"? Mackey? McKigh? 64.85.229.248 (talk) 06:57, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I see that it is pronounced "McKigh" at the end of the "History" section. 64.85.229.248 (talk) 06:59, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Geography[edit]

In the Geography section, it says "The Range lies on the western side of the city, with the Athelstane Range to the west". There is an Athelstane Range (which is usually just called The Range) in Rockhampton 4 hours south. I don't know Mackay that well, but it seems unlikely that both cities have a range called Athelstane. Is this a mixup? Joebenson9 (talk) 07:44, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

During World War2 McKay was used by the USA for the 5th Airforce to have a place for R&R. I was one of the lucky ones that was exposed to their kindness and hospitality. The people took us to their hearts and tried to help us forget (just for a litlt while) what we had to go back to.I don't think that any military man that was ever in Mckay will ever forget that beautiful place by the sea. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.83.159.48 (talk) 20:05, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

History section[edit]

there's a big gap between 1958-2008. LibStar (talk) 06:27, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's difficult to justify calling Captain Cook a white settler. Sailing past in 1770 hardly constitutes settling in the region. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikenlesley (talkcontribs) 11:51, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, Cook did not settle. I changed it to just say he was European. Kerry (talk) 04:18, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

River Sessions Festival[edit]

The River Sessions Festival section is not right. Who says it is the premier youth and contemporary music festival for the region? Or that it features the best music acts from Australia? The fact that it isn't going ahead this year is trivial to someone wanting to know about Mackay. This section is too promotional, can't be verified and isn't that important. - Shiftchange (talk) 11:28, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mod removes information randomly.[edit]

The current population information is wrong, not only that, it could be improved, I added this information: According to a document from The Mackay Regional Council Website , In June 30 2016, Mackay had a population of 117,703 people, with a population increase of approximately 14,136 from 2006 to 2016. This population of 117,703 decreased slightly at an average annual rate of -0.32% year-on-year over the preceding five years. To see a graph of the Mackay population from 2006 to 2016, search for Mackay's regional profile 2018. In the aforementioned population increase of 14,136, the majority of population increase during this time occurred in Eimeo-Rural View, which increased by 5,475 people, an annual average increase of 5.8%. Pioneer Valley (+3,055) and Ooralea - Baker's Creek (+1,873) experienced the next highest levels of population increase over the last ten years. Slade Point closely followed by North Mackay experienced the largest declines between 2006 to 2016 (According to the Mackay Regional Profile 2018). This was removed... Shabdeg (talk) 02:02, 25 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Shabdeg: Looking at your history of contributions you have never added any information about the population of Mackay, so nobody has removed it. Perhaps you did not click on Publish to publish it. Secondly, when discussing population, you need to be very clear if you are talking about the population of the suburb of Mackay, the town of Mackay, the local government area of Mackay Region (and therefore if you are adding the information to the correct Wikipedia article), when it applies to, and an adequate citation so others can verify it. As far as I can see, the population for Mackay as a town was 75,710 in the 2016 Census (see [1]). The population for Mackay Region in the 2016 census was 114,969 (see [2]). So while I don't know where you got the number 117,703 from, from the size of it, it is almost certainly for the local government area not the town. Kerry (talk) 04:52, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Central Queensland vs North Queensland[edit]

Currently most of the lede of this article is taken up with the issue of Central QLD vs North QLD. Does it really matter than much? Is this really what the reader coming to this article most wants to know? Could we shift most of the discussion into Regions of Queensland and just summarise here with something like ... "Mackay is sometimes described as being in Central Queensland and sometimes as North Queensland as these regions are not precisely defined." which is the simple truth of the matter. Your thoughts? Kerry (talk) 06:55, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I came to this article and reading the introduction I was struck by the exactly the same thought. I've changed the article introduction as per your suggestion, and moved the remainder of the discussion to the section on Geography. Whether you want to incorporate that discussion into Regions of Queensland is up to you. RossOgi (talk) 14:17, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bluewater trail subsection[edit]

Overlong? I feel that it needs some serious trimming. Boscaswell talk 00:54, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Boscaswell: There's a number of citations in it. Enough to make a separate article using the content in the Mackay article and then the Mackary article can link to it and provide a lot less detail? Kerry (talk) 05:46, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
