Hello Luton editors,

Would it be possible for Luton to have a rejig of content according to WP:UKCITIES? The guideline also has hand tips on acheieving GA (and FA) status, and obtaining thoroughness for place-articles. --Jza84 |  Talk  16:25, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

i've looked through the guidelines and i will try and make sure its done soon enough - or at least make sure others know Random articles (talk) 19:49, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
I have started to get some of the improvements in. Reordered the article so it is more in line with the project recomendations. There is much to do if we are going to get this to good article status.--GazMan7 (talk) 15:06, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

once in a while you should put the history of luton and the meaning of history means back in those days —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.198.182.14 (talk) 16:13, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I dont understand what your getting at?GazMan7 (talk) 08:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Notable Lutonian: Abdul Ahad

I propose we add this gent from Luton named Abdul Ahad. He is a notable astronomer who defined the Ahad's Sphere of the Sun:

His short bio:

Abdul Ahad was born in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh on 15 December 1968. He has since been educated in and is now domiciled in Luton, United Kingdom. He is a notable alumni of the University of Bedfordshire.

Major Works

  • First Ark to Alpha Centauri (2005)
  • First Ark to Alpha Centauri 2 (2006)

that seems perfectly reasonable to me to add him in, go for it Random articles (talk) 16:20, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

FYI, Ahad has continuously tried to promote his vanity biography in the last 2 years. His article has gone through an AFD, and has been deleted 5 times. --Ragib (talk) 14:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Yes, I expect quite a few of us were present at that AFD; I expect his notability has *significantly* improved since that time. You don't award 'Honorary Membership' to a non-notable person, as his Bangladesh Astronomical Society has done - unless he is of 'international repute'. No, really I think our Ahad has done pretty well considering ;-) Uranometria (talk) 16:06, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Sure, references will be quite useful. Of course, they can't be from his *own site* astroscience.org, which is linked above. :) Provide references that fulfill WP:V,WP:RS, WP:N. --Ragib (talk) 16:08, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
References are all on his media page:Local media coverage. If you want to verify the 'letter of invitation from his Astro society why not write to this Mr. F. R. Sarker guy via the Bangladesh Astronomy Society website? I could do it, but then I'm not the one who's debating notability here.Uranometria (talk) 16:32, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
:), no, it is *your* task here to establish notability and provide references. --Ragib (talk) 16:33, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Alright then, I will write to this Society though I can't promise my reply anytime soon. In the meantime, I found a link to Ahad's paper on that site. (out of interest, since you edit all the Bangladesh pages on wiki I assume you read Bengali unicode, do you dispute his full page bio in the bangladesh wikipedia? All I get is a series of Bengali sentences hopelessly meaningless to me :-)Uranometria (talk) 16:39, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
And why is this paper significant? Many wikipedians, including myself, have papers published in peer-reviewed journals, that alone doesn't make them notable. (Also, the "paper" seems to be only a letter published in BAA journal, and not a research article). As for the Bengali wikipedia biography, I'll nominate it for deletion as well, and existence of that doesn't also establish Ahad's/your notability. --Ragib (talk) 20:28, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
This concept seems to be in widespread use [1] and [2]. And why would you like to 'nominate his other country wikipedia for deletion? What right do you have to un-do what orther people deem as good works that are notable? No, I think you are going to delete this guy WHATEVER evidence people give you about his notability!Gilgamesh007 (talk) 12:33, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
73 hits, many of which are from <sarcasm> the esteemed research site myspace!! </sarcasm> :). Most of the discussion seem to be self-published or reported (just like his "honor" of being a member of Planetary society and British Astronomical association ... societies that *anyone* can join by paying the membership fee:). The consensus is to delete the Bengali wiki bio as well for the same reason : non-notability and vanity bio. --Ragib (talk) 07:16, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
And it has been deleted from Bengali wikipedia because of non-notability of the subject. So, "it exists in another wikipedia" argument is no longer applicable. --Ragib (talk) 17:59, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
erm, well this certainly blossomed from when I last checked. He is perfectly notable, as a bookseller we stock his books, so even if you cant say anything about his astronomy, he's an author at the very least with connections to the town. And as for the Bengali, well i'm with you Uranometria, completely meaningless. Might be an idea to suggest a translation onto the english wikipedia Random articles (talk) 20:09, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
he's doing good for a new author. last i checked his sales are good in Canada on the amazon mirror [3] where he got sales ranks for his novellas. btw, I'm one of his myspace friends :) bye. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nozomi44 (talkcontribs) 13:20, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I don't get it, the amazon link just shows his book is available for order. What else are we supposed to see there? --Ragib (talk) 07:16, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
It means his books are selling internationally (I'll be buying them soon :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.148.213.242 (talk) 19:54, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Looks like a vanity article for a minor scientist currently with a Luton connection through the University. Seems to have a very limited connection to the town even if he had his own page. Not notable, lets move on.GazMan7 (talk) 12:27, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
eh? He _lives_ in Luton [4]. And no I ain't him, are you?Kingkong77 (talk) 20:06, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
