"Lucidor den olycklige"[edit]

"Lucidor den olycklige" would in modern Swedish mean "Lucidor the unhappy". However, I don't think this is what Lucidor himself meant. Rather, for him "lycka" must have meant "fortune", and so "den olycklige" becomes "the unfortunate". We can look at "Skulle jag sörja" and read:

Dy har jag hoppet, I lär en gång skriva, att I, olycklig, är lustig som jag.

Which could be translated as:

Thus I have the hope that ye will once write that ye, while unfortunate, are happy like me.

If "olycklig" meant "unhappy", such an interpretation would make no sense, nor would indeed the entire poem, which is built around the idea of remaining in good cheer even though one suffers from misfortune. David ekstrand (talk) 15:30, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
