Place of Birth[edit]

I have removed the statement regarding her place of birth. Sandra Day O'Connor, as indicated by her article, was born in El Paso, Texas, not in Arizona. Almost Nominated?[edit]

What does "almost nominated" to the United States Supreme court mean? Did President Johnson start to write her name on the nomination form, then cross it out, and start to write another name? Did he fill out the form with her name on it, then tear it up, and prepare another one? Would it be better to say that Lockwood made a strenuous effort to be nominated, but was unsuccessful?John Paul Parks (talk) 05:52, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been revised to mention 1965 and 1967. That President Johnson considered nominating her to fill either of those vacancies is highly unlikely. In 1965, he persuaded Arthur Goldberg to resign so that he could be appointed Ambassador to the UN. Johnson then appointed his crony and pal, Abe Fortas, to the seat. Besides, that was the "Jewish seat" on the Court, and Lockwood would not have been eligible for that position. In 1967, Tom Clark resigned because his son, Ramsey Clark, had been appointed Attorney General, and it was considered that would create a conflict in government cases argued before the Court. Johnson then appointed Thurgood Marshall, the first black, to the Court. Thus an agenda was afoot, and Lockwood would not have fit into that at all. If Carl Hayden suggested her nomination, and there is no source cited for that, it may have been part of an effort to get Lockwood out of Arizona.Alexander Springstea (talk) 15:38, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
