Tag[edit]

The word is defined on several dog websites e.g. [1] as a cross between two sighthound breeds. I guess the hoax tag can go now. 82.26.163.0 15:06, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Definition[edit]

"Long dog" is also defined on several sites (e.g. [2]) as "Any hunting dog which is a large and 'long' dog; with intimations of slenderness rather than bulk. Includes greyhounds, Pharaoh hounds, Salukis, Afghans, most lurchers", not something separate from lurchers. Anyone know how to figure this out definitively? Elf | Talk 01:26, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The classic British definition of a "longdog" is a cross between two sighthounds. A longdog is a type of "lurcher", and should be included as such on that page. See Walsh "Lurchers and Longdogs" 1977. The description, definition & photo currently on the Longdog page of a longdog being a cross between a pointer and a spaniel is patently incorrect and it is also illogical. It should be removed. The original author needs to clarify what is meant by "a pedigree with a green coat"Richard Hawkins (talk) 14:53, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your statement that a longdog is a cross between two sighthounds conflicts with your statement that they are a type of lurcher. As far as I am aware almost everybody with a real interest in these sort of things defines a lurcher as a cross between a sighthound and something other than a sighthound. I have both so I'm not axe-grinding here 188.28.87.180 (talk) 17:31, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect to you Elf the 'several dog websites' don't know what they are talking about. This is one of the big problems with wikipedia, it repeats any old twaddle just because somebody somewhere has published something whether it's right, wrong or an outright lie. Keeping running dogs has been in my family for as far back as anybody can remember and I know for a fact a lurcher is a sighthound x something else and a longdog is a sighthound x sighthound. Unfortunately my say so is worthless because there's always somebody ready to shout 'SOURCE!!' I sometimes get the impression that if someone wrote elephants can't fly somebody else would demand proof even if one had just dropped on them from a great height.92.40.227.41 (talk) 15:38, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
