Obviously someone looked through the US census records, but who did that? Shalom (HelloPeace) 15:23, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found Popular Given Names US, 1801-1999 but not sure if it was the source, and if so, aren't there any copyright problem? Suppose it's not from baby names by Social Security Online. Tolena (talk) 00:23, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please extend the lists to the top 50 given names[edit]

Currently, this article and 12 other ones like this list only the top 10 most popular male and female names for each year in the decade. Please extend all of the lists and tables of popular names in each article below to the top 50 most popular names. The purpose of the extensions of the lists of names is to make these pages longer and more informational and entertaining.

Also, please create the article with the title List of the most popular names in the 2010s in the United States because the SSA has released data for this decade. Ar Colorado (talk) 20:34, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ar Colorado, you're more than welcome to add those names if you want with proper sourcing. With the 2010s one, if you don't have permission to create an article there yet, you can start it at Draft:List of the most popular names in the 2010s in the United States and then submit it for AfC (or even just ping me) and if it meets wikipedia's guidelines it will be moved to List of the most popular names in the 2010s in the United States. I would also possibly notify WT:WikiProject Lists or somewhere similar, just in case there is consensus somewhere on inclusion criteria for these lists that I can't find. @Ar Colorado, what source are you using for the expansion. I can try to maybe write a script that parses out the data and puts it into wikiformat so it's not as rote editing. TartarTorte 15:29, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using data from the SSA for the expansion. I am just using the source to make a numbered list for the most popular names. Ar Colorado (talk) Ar Colorado (talk) 17:09, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also...I've been maintaining these articles from 1880 to 1960 for the last four years via regularly checking them for vandalism. They're a frequent target, partly because many people can't resist editing their own names or the names of someone they know into the list, but I originally started by reverting the lists to their original forms, then reversing vandalism as it occurred. So the lists from 1880 to 1960 for the top ten should be accurate, but anything later than that probably has undetected vandalism, so the entire list, including the existing top ten for those years, should be replaced. I changed the top ten names for each year in this article, because it originally wasn't in the correct order that the data from the SSA says. I used accurate data from the SSA to list the top 50 names for each year, which I don't think should be considered vandalism. It gives the source for all the top 50 lists, so it should be correct because the SSA mentions the top 50 names in the order that the article currently says after I edited it. I looked at the links to the SSA listed at the bottom of the list, but I didn't see anything that listed the top 50 names by year. There's a listing by decade for the top 200, and a listing by year for the top 5, but no listing that I could find that listed the top fifty (or more) for each year.
Could you please provide a link for your source? Ormewood (talk) 23:58, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The link is already provided in the article. The first link in the References section gives the link of where I get the data from. To see the data in the link provided in the article, you enter data in the section called "Popular Names by Birth Year". You can see the most popular names provided for each year in this article and the source will prove that this list is accurate. Ar Colorado (talk) 14:29, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
