How can Bay of Whales Antarctica be the southernmost navigable body of water, while the port at Winter Quarters Bay in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica is at a higher latitude? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:468:D01:5D:1CD:A471:287A:EF7 (talk) 22:33, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't the McDonalds in Invercargill, New Zealand the southern most McDonalds in the world? when you drive into Invercargill theres a big sign saying something like "Visit the Southern most McDonalds in the world!" Lossenelin 05:14, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The difficulty with this article and the similar The world's most northern is how anyone knows whether it is accurate. Where did all this information come from? --Bduke 04:39, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editors, often anon ones, continue to keep adding items without sourcing any reference, so I have added the {{not verified}} tag. --Bduke 00:16, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Questions[edit]

We already know the southernmost birthplace of a human, how about the southernmost birthplace of a person featured on a banknote? If someone can tell us the southernmost festival of early or rennaissance music, I might turn up. Also am I wondering where is the southernmost annex to an embassy.Someone please have us informed on the worlds southernmost plantation for avocados, olives, garlic, almonds, mangoes, hard drugs, soft drugs and so on.(Stat-ist-ikk (talk) 00:54, 8 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Anyone knows whether there is a Post Office in Patriot Hills? At Villa Las Estrellas (Chilean settlement), there is a bank, a post office, a primary school and even a GSM network. Most probably some Argentinian settlement has similar services but I don't know where is souther. Exceptuating Antarctica, there are a post office, bank, schools (high school), munipalicity, etc at Puerto Williams, in the Navarino Island.

I guessed there should be a proper supermarket on Ushuaia or Rio Grande (according population numbers). Otherwise, it is on Punta Arenas.

Patriot Hills facilities counts as hotel?

Chile-related information is incorrect[edit]

Most of the information related to Chile is seriously incorrect; as numerous media sources clearly state, the world's most southern university and public library are in Ushuaia, Argentina. I'll include my sources on every edit, see the history page for more details. Cheers, —For the Nation's Honour (velox et mortifer) 02:01, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The most southern Public Library is "PIERRE CHILI" in Puerto Williams, Chile. [1] [2]User:Espenta (User talk:Espenta) 18:41, 10 april 2008 (UTC)

Move proposal[edit]

Oppose It has been proposed that this article be moved to "The world's most southerly". I don't think it's necessary. "Southern" is acceptable here too; If the ambiguity is causing confusion (which I don't believe it is), "The world's southernmost" would be a better move. -- JHunterJ 17:08, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose "southerly": Our precisian is inventing his grammar; although this may be a AE/BE dispute again (in which case it should be ignored). See, for example, this site calling Alaska the nation's "most northern, western, and eastern State." Septentrionalis 20:20, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - As correctly guessed above, 1) this is a UK/US difference or actually only preference and 2) both "the southernmost" and "the most southern" are perfectly acceptable in UK English too.

Lots of time is wasted on Wikipedia by unnecessary proposals and discussions that could be easily avoided by a short look into at least one UK and US dictionary or grammar. At the very least, one should do some Google searches before claiming that someone else's English is incorrect. Google results can only be used to prove that something is better if one takes a close look at the individual links because Google frequencies are often misleading, but they can be used to disprove the typical claims made by amateur "linguists" on WP that something doesn't exist or is incorrect just because it doesn't exist in the dialect of the amateur.

As there seems to be no consensus for the requested move after more than 5 days, I'm removing the listing from WP:RM. Cheers. -GTBacchus(talk) 22:55, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The world's most southern elevator[edit]

Where is the world's most southern elevator? --84.61.32.170 09:51, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it's in Ushuaia, Argentina, I need a proper source to include it though. —Coat of Arms (talk) 14:44, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could be a lift at the Amundsen-Scott base, or one at the Navy base at Puerto Williams. It would not surprise me. (Stat-ist-ikk (talk) 00:02, 10 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Move[edit]

This article would do better as a list but would it work as "List of the World's southernmost things" or similar title? This also goes for it's northern counterpart. Simply south not SS, sorry 14:38, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since no one's objected to the move, you can simply move it anywhere you like. However, as I'm going to be nominating this for deletion, that rename can take place after the Afd. Cheers,--Aervanath (talk) 05:37, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Possible error[edit]

Please excuse me if I am wrong, but I seem to find that the coordinates for the worlds southernmost diplomatic mission to be erronous. 82.134.28.194 (talk) 09:50, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have corrected it, thanks for pointing it out. --BIL (talk) 09:06, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the southermost metro station; wouldn't it be Parliament station (underground) in Melbourne, or Frankston Station (above ground)? These are at 37 degrees South, where BA is at 34 degrees South. Or am I mis-classifying Melbourne's train system as a metro? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.64.111.65 (talk) 07:23, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

items removed[edit]

We no longer can read info on the worlds southernmost Mc Doalds, Pizza Hut, IKEA, or other such brand names. Did someone mow down that list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stat-ist-ikk (talkcontribs) 22:03, 29 April 2009

Yes, but he did not do the same splendid job on the northermos list. To mow down that category was not very nice, but this medium (wiki) does not appreciate that concern. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.134.28.194 (talk) 13:10, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Uncited items and citations[edit]

Uncited items[edit]

I have removed every last item flagged as uncited. Fiddle Faddle (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 07:50, 14 March 2010

Citations[edit]

It is not sufficient to cite the existence of an item for this list. For the article to be encyclopaedic the citation must cite its status as most southerly, otherwise, for the purposes of this article, the item is uncited. Co-ordinated themselves are insufficient. I could add Nelson's Column to the list with co-ordinates, but that does not make it the most southerly monument, it simply locates the thing on the surface of the earth. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 07:50, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think an exception to that would be appropriate for items that are located essentially at the South Pole. I'm thinking in particular of the Jack F. Paulus Skiway. --Avenue (talk) 11:05, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

related List of northernmost items[edit]

There is List of northernmost items which has endured FOUR AFD processes, the last being Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of northernmost items (2nd nomination) which resulted in a "Keep" decision. --Doncram (talk) 13:59, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Southernmost subway station[edit]

Hello, I have doubts on Parliament railway station, given that query https://w.wiki/3akT . Does underground station mean subway station or any railway station that is underground ? --Bouzinac (talk) 18:39, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone add a new thing in the geography section[edit]

I do not understand how to use geohack, which is what every other thing here uses. So can someone who does understand it please add southernmost continental land (excluding Antarctica), the coordinates are 53°53'46.0"S 71°18'15.8"W in Cape Froward, Chile. thank you.Smoceany2 (talk) 14:57, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Antarctic light railway[edit]

I've restored the entry removed in this edit concerning the light railway at Dumont d'Urville Station. It is incorrect that the source has gone dead as claimed in the edit summary. It is actually a print source (gbooks, Worldcat) so only the convenience link has gone dead, presumably removed as a copyright violation. However, that site also makes the same claim on another page which I have added as a second source. The IP might be right that the railway is now defunct, but there is no evidence for that and the source, from the British Antarctic Survey just has to count as reliable. I'm trying to get a copy from here to verify exactly what it says. But even if it is now decommissioned, it is still the southernmost railway ever built so belongs on this list.
