Hardieville, former town or hamlet?[edit]

I noticed someone recently removed the statement that Hardieville was a town before it was annexed. This claim is supported by an accompanying source, which further says it was taken from a third-party (Alex Johnston, Keith G. Gladwyn and L. Gregory Ellis. Lethbridge: Its Coal Industry (Lethbridge, Lethbridge: City of Lethbridge, 1989), Occasional Paper No. 20, The Lethbridge Historical Society.) Unless someone can provide another source that explicitly states Hardieville was not a town, I see no reason to not say what the accompanying source states. --Kmsiever (talk) 17:08, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If the accompanying source and its third-party source intended to refer to Hardieville as a previously incorporated town, then both are incorrect. If they intended to use the term town (as opposed to, say, the use of the term community) as a general term to describe Hardieville, then unfortunately the use of the term has misled readers to thinking it was once an incorporated town, thereby resulting in the accidental infiltration of false information into Wikipedia. (Note that the second accompanying source makes no reference to Hardieville being an incorporated town prior to annexation by Lehtbridge.)
Hardieville does not show up as an incorporated entity whatsoever (town, village, etc.) in any of Official Population Lists published by Alberta Municipal Affairs prior to 1978 (year of annexation). Its absence in any of these lists is explicit evidence that it was never incorporated as a town or any other entity.
Further, countless hours of research of historic population counts of incorporated municipalities from federal census publications (1871 to 2006 inclusive) and incorporation records at the Alberta Provincial Archives has confirmed that Hardieville was never previously incorporated as a town. My federal census research has confirmed however that Hardieville was recognized as an unincorporated place prior to its annexation by Lethbridge. If you want proof of this, please advise and I will scan and provide. --Hwy43 (talk) 18:47, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. Thanks for posting that link. It’s just that we can’t simply take your word against a published source. Thanks, again! --Kmsiever (talk) 18:56, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem. Given the edit was contrary to a source that was presumed accurate, I was not surprised to hear from someone. In the meantime, I have been able to find a provincial source that explicitly refers to Hardieville as a hamlet at the time of annexation. I will remove the misleading source from both this article and the Lethbridge article so that it no longer inadvertently perpetuates false information and replace it with the new provincial source.
