What's the point of this article

As it is now, the article seems to have only statitstical significance (like saying "list of countries whose name start with A"). If there are any political, economic, military consecuences of being borderless, they should be explained. Otherwise this article is pretty much useless. F15x28 07:10, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

US borderless

I must make a case for the United States since no border is enforced.

Cyprus

The comment below is quite correct. The British Akrotiri and Dhekelia Sovereign Base Areas are now included in the CIA Fact Book as distinct entries, including maps showing their border, and the US Dept. of State List of Dependencies and the British government list them as dependencies, no different in status than other dependencies. I deleted Cyprus from the list, including a footnote to this effect. DLinth

In the case of Cyprus, what about the British bases there? Certainly, as British dependencies, completely sovereign to the UK, they ought to count for more than Guantanamo Bay. As far as I can tell, there is a definite border there, by the standards used in this page.

Rename

I think that this article should be rename - every country has to have a border (even island countries define their territory in their constitution). The article name "borderless country" is quite misleading - it should be more suit if it is Island country or Countries with no land border. But the article on island countries already exist - what's the different between the two articles (borderless country and island country)? If no difference then the article should be merge. I think that was Joshua Chiew's point. "Borderless country" is quite misleading, and doesn't seem very encylopedic when you consider that regardless of whether there is a land border, many nations do claim waters that border each other. The current article isn't sourced because (as I've searched) almost all references to "borderless country" appear only on Wikipedia, the two other instances I came across immediately were a fansite about games, and an article talking about a hypothetical "borderless" country "built for peace." Island countries are obvious, they're defined by the fact they are islands. I suggest that the useful information be merged into Island country, and then redirect (or AfD) this article. Redirect or merge?

Since it has obviously been contentious, should this article be merged to List of island countries? Such a merge has happened once already, with content from here merged in there during this diff. So if a merge or redirection occurs, this article may not be deleted unless the List of island countries is deleted first. Instead {{R from merge}} should be used. (Some people have claimed that this article was a POV fork of the other. It certainly didn't start that way; the first version of this article does not have content that was in that article. Beyond that, I don't care to sort this out.) GRBerry 16:28, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
