what constitutes a reference? i looked at the straws lane one in Australia as i used to live around the corner from it and know it well and have found several videos on youtube and verious discussions about it. depending on "references" defining what is an optical illusion anyway i don´t see why all of these should be removed unless a quick google search reveals nothing.--Lotsofmagnets (talk) 16:08, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Forrestfield, Western Australia: Holmes Road, halfway between Whistlepipe Gully and Crumpet Creek, known as Gravity Hill.

  • Powell River, British Columbia: Gibson's Beach Road (shortly after the driver turns off the highway)
  • Cobourg, Ontario: Gully Road, in between Cobourg and Grafton. Take Highway 2 to Gully Road, drive north and turn the car around. Put the car in neutral right at the posted speed limit sign, facing the Highway 401 bridge.
  • Thunder Hill, Manitoba: On the main gravel road to the ski hill there is one part where you put ur car into neutral and u will go backwards up hill then speed up more after u go over the little hump. To the local farmers and the village of Benito it is called Magnetic Hill.

  • Antioch: Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. Exit Highway 4 at Sommersville South, follow it until the road runs out. The mine road begins approximately 1.5 to 2.0 miles into the park after passing the information booth.
  • Antioch: on Empire Mine Road. This road has since been closed to the public. From East/West exit Highway 4 at Lone Tree Way, turn right on Deer Valley Road, turn right on Empire Mine Road. From South, take Ygnacio Valley Road, right on Clayton Road which becomes Marsh Creek Road, left on Deer Valley, left on Empire Mine Road.
  • Buena Park: At the end of San Lucas Circle facing south. Street is level, yet car will start rolling after 1–2 minutes in neutral. [citation needed]
  • Corona: On Gilbert Ave going north between Hidden Springs Drive and Cleveland Way.
  • La Jolla:
  • Oak Glen: Oak Glen Road past Oak Glen.
  • [[Ocotillo, California]|]: on the 805 west just before Boulevard, California on the San Diego and Imperial county line, leave the mountain spring road, drive down the incline and place the car in neutral.
  • Pasadena: Go up Porter from Altadena Drive, make left on Loma Alta, and go all the way till you reach a hillside with a lone light post. It is also noted that you should put white powder on your trunk/bumper.
  • Santa Paula: On the CA 126 headed West. Make a right on the road just before the little red school house.
  • Spring Valley: La Presa St. north of Jamacha Rd. Not as good as before houses were built there.
  • Vallejo: Lake Herman Road off Columbus Parkway. Spot is at the bottom of the first hill where the road merges into single lanes.
  • Whittier: Rose Hills Cemetery. there is a steep incline in which water seems to flows uphill and cars do not roll down the hill.

Connecticut[edit]

  • Trumbull: Exit 7 on Route 25 North. Stop the car on the crack a few feet behind the stop line and it will roll backwards "up" the ramp. In the 19th century, a railroad bed that existed at what is the current intersection of White Plains Rd. and the exit ramp. A section of this rail bed has been preserved as a nature walk, locally known as "the valley."

Hawaii[edit]

  • Honolulu: Acid Hill, Poola St, off Kalanianaole Hwy East Oahu before Kuaiwi Place below Ancient Hawaiian Heiau: Before residential expansion, this area was a cul de sac and was much easier to test. The area is a level area of roadway after climbing the hill following the hairpin turn (approx. 500m after Puahia Pl) just before the gated community. Face the car towards the ocean. Legend has it that the Ancient Hawaiian spirits of the Heiau help move the car.

Iowa[edit]

  • Estherville: Drive about 1 mile south from Shullsburg past the water tower on City. U. Stop next to the curve/25 mph sign. Put the vehicle in neutral and roll backward up the hill.

Idaho[edit]

  • Post Falls: Take Spokane street exit and head south. Take a left on Schilling loop, past W. Margishward road. Head south about 0.2 miles. you will come to a small hill on the dirt road. go to the top of the hill turn around and stop right where the hill starts to go down.
  • Grangeville: Mount Idaho Grade Road, heading North just before Highway 13 (Main Street).

  • Burkittsville: Gapland Road about a quarter mile west of town. It appears that vehicles roll 'uphill' east toward the center of town.

I removed the "Brandy Camp, near Harrisburg" citation. (1) There is no Brandy Camp near Harrisburg--it's in Elk County, about 170 miles from Harrisburg, on the way to Erie, and (2) Every citation I found for a gravity hill in Brandy Camp (near Harrisburg or otherwise) stated that this seemed to be some sort of well-traveled error. References are required - why?[edit]

It's pretty common for new editors to come to this page and list a gravity hill that they know of personally, using map coordinates or perhaps a YouTube video as a reference. These additions quickly get removed, which is frustrating and confusing, so I thought I'd reiterate the wikipedia rule here.

The gold standard in wikipedia isn't truth (which is often very, very hard to determine) - it is verifiability (which is easier to determine). References have to involves outsiders who have written about or otherwise referenced the thing you're writing about.

This produces some weird situations, such as when you are actually standing on a gravity hill but can't write about it because nobody else has mentioned it in a printed or online source. Very, very frustrating, I know.

But necessary.

This article is already a long, long, long list - imagine how long it would be if everybody could put down every time they think they saw a gravity hill somewhere. "Turn left after the intersection of routes X and Y, and go 3 miles until you see a red barn." - there have literally been examples similar to that. It would be (in fact, it was) a garbled cluttered mess of hearsay.

Requiring a verifiable source doesn't guarantee that the mystery hill is legitimate, and it forces this article to overlook lots of mystery hills, but it's the best we can do so far.

Montevideo, Minnesota Gravity Hill[edit]

Hello! I hail from Montevideo, MN where we have a Gravity Hill that isn't listed on this page. It's long been notorious among residents there and we've made efforts to add it to this list in the past however we were missing citations. We've since found a citation and are curious if it would meet the proper standards for inclusion:
