Access to Chase's?[edit]

If anyone has access to Chase's Calendar of Events, it'd be a great resource to expand this list. -- Eclipsed (talk) (COI) 22:09, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not listed in the date pages[edit]

These events are not listed under the day pages. For example, I can't find National Crabmeat Day on March 8 and I can't find National Chip and Dip Day on March 23. 24.91.82.29 (talk) 16:05, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

June[edit]

Something's wrong with the June table. The far left wall of a row is missing. I don't know how to fix this, but can anyone? Buscus 3 (talk) 20:59, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria & paring of the list[edit]

Without inclusion criteria, this list appears to be suffering from unreferenced and probably unreliable additions. I also suspect hoaxes, e.g. "National Garlic Peanut Butter Day" (can't find ANY reliable reference for this one - methinks "Molly and Ben" were a couple of stoned college kids who thought this would be a hoot.). In fact, I'll just remove that one.

Let me propose an inclusion criteria:

A holiday can be added to the list if

1. It is discussed (not just listed) in at least 3 separate reliable 3rd party sources. or 2. It is an officially declared holiday of a country (declared by Congress, Parliament, Prime Minister, President, etc).

Criteria #1's insistence on at least 3 sources will help triangulate the fact that these food holidays exist and are not hoaxes. Too many webpages and blogs out there, though, can't be trusted, as they seem to merely copy this list. This is why Criteria #1 insists on discussion of the holiday, rather than just being part of an indiscriminate list.

Criteria #2 stipulates the holiday is official, so it should be relatively easy to cite the appropriate government page or legislation #.

I'm taking this far too seriously. Cheers, AstroCog (talk) 22:43, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also, who is "Theresa DeLuca"? She is listed in the notes for many of these, as if the name lends some reliability or authority. I don't think so. Convince me. Cheers, AstroCog (talk) 22:50, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, assuming no major objections happen in the next few days, I will remove all listings on this page that are not cited. I'll do a good faith search for sources first. I'll apply the criteria I mentioned above and add it to the lead of the article itself. Cheers, AstroCog (talk) 14:47, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Was this culling done back then? It seems at least half of the entries now are unsourced. Gjxj (talk) 13:13, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Featured list[edit]

This list is getter closer and closer to meeting the WP:Featured list criteria. Nice! Perhaps a WP:Peer review first? See Wikipedia:Peer review/List of food days/archive1. -- Eclipsed (talk) (email) 09:22, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dealing with hoaxes and nonsense[edit]

I think we are accumulating too many items here which are not real food days. One off publicity stunts by food manufacturers should not be included and nor should unreferenced items which are probably hoaxes. Of course, something that started off as a publicity stunt but then became genuinely observed is OK. Here is what I propose:

  • The item needs to be referenced here or in the linked article.
  • At a minimum, the reference must corroborate the date given and show that the event is genuinely observed.
  • Things do not go in the "global" section just because they have the word "world" in the title or because some people assume that their nation's writ runs worldwide. They need to be genuinely observed internationally. That doesn't mean in all countries but it does mean in quite a large number. So American events that spill over into Canada is not normally enough. Certainly, few ex-pats observing it in other countries is not enough but an event that starts off like that but gains genuine global traction can be OK. In short, if people associate something as being overwhelmingly associated with just one country and it has little observance elsewhere then it goes under that country, not "global".
  • As always, the onus is on whoever adds the item to ensure that it is referenced and in the correct section. If it isn't and it gets removed then they can re-add it only if they address those issues. Repeatedly adding unreferenced entries can be treated as vandalism if it persists after warnings are given.

Does that sound OK? --DanielRigal (talk) 12:12, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In general this article struggles with encyclopedic relevancy and bad quality sources. It is indeed in the nature of Food Days that there usually is no official entity behind them but I think we should limit the coverage on food days acknowledged by the corresponding countries' governments instead of reflecting the never ending inventations of various commercial PR campaigns. Wikipedia is not about original research and in case of doubt we should not write about a food day as it might likely be just some new hoax or PR thing. Also see WP:IRS. Evotopid (talk) 10:42, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Shall we start by removing any entry that has no reference at all? A lot of silliness on this page. Richardson mcphillips (talk) 22:13, 25 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I can't see any problem with that. Any genuine ones can be put back later, with references, if references are found. --DanielRigal (talk) 00:12, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DanielRigal, I made a start. The basic thing, it seems to me, is that it takes more than one reference (from a trade journal, a local newspaper, a company, whatever) to make the claim that it's somehow a "national" day. The convention of "must have a Wikipedia article" is a good one to follow here. And obviously the article was enormously US-slanted, and what it needs is a more complete listing of international days (I wrote up Bretzelsonndeg for that purpose). National Bagel Day 2019[edit]

Hello! According to the below article and attached Chase's Calendar of Events National Bagel Day is on January 15th, 2019.[1]

Reply 09-JAN-2019[edit]

  Edit request partially implemented

  • The date for this event appears to be occassionally adjusted based on decisions made by those in the bagel industry, informed in part by the desire to promote sales. As there is no fixed day for this event, the listing date was changed to varied.

National Pizza Day[edit]

National Pizza Day is listed under "United States", but links to a website from the U.K. (https://nationalpizzaday.co.uk). The link also appears to be a marketing/promotional page. Is this allowed on Wikipedia?

"All of these are a federal holiday"[edit]

Is that a joke?? Obviously NONE are federal holidays Federal holidays in the United States. Will just delete that unless someone quickly offers up an explanation. Gjxj (talk) 13:03, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mass deletions, or a.k.a missing pecan cookies[edit]

Hello Drmies. Came by to see September 21 "National Pecan Cookie Day" (yummm) and saw that this page has been, to put it kindly, cut back a bit. What was wrong with the the previous version pre-late July? The entries seem extremely well sourced, well ordered and illustrated, and that version seemed a much fuller and complete coverage of the topic. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:09, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Randy Kryn, the problem was that most of the entries were to non-notable events, and I culled it the way we cull lists of schools, beauty salons, churches, etc. Here, specifically, the problem was also that much of the content I removed was also promotional, and sourced only to promotional outlets, like the trade organization for pig tails or chestnut pies or what have you. I'm not opposed to pecan cookies, though as an adopted Southerner I prefer pecan pies, and as a diabetic I don't eat them, but if there is sourcing there, you can of course write it up and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 14:15, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • There's a proposal to restore some of these entries, see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2021 October 27#National Coffee Ice Cream Day. – Uanfala (talk) 00:42, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup and inclusion criteria[edit]

Following the AfD, I think we need to clean up quite aggressively. I propose that we:

  1. Remove all the pictures in the tables. A very small number of pictures could be added outside the tables representing only a few very notable days e.g. a picture of a pancake for Shrove Tuesday.
  2. Remove anything that is not referenced to a source that is WP:RS and which actually mentions the thing.

Questions:

  • How hardass do we want to be? Should we remove everything that doesn't have an article or at least a referenced paragraph in another article? I'd support that.
  • How food/drink related does it have to be? Should we remove anything that is not a day/week/month dedicated to a fairly specific food or drink. Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security is a good example of an item that doesn't quite fit. It is about access to food not a type of food. Should we keep things like that or not?
  • Do the tables really help? Would it be better to just use lists. Maybe we could have two columns to save space?
  • Should days dedicated to whole cuisines be included? If so, should we separate them out. Vegan Food Day is a bit different from a more specific food day. I'm thinking that they should be a separate section.
  • Are we OK with food weeks and food months as well as days? I think so. DanielRigal (talk) 17:14, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • DanielRigal, this thing has been restored on very shaky grounds, and the result is clear. I just removed "World Nutella Day", in the "Global" section, proclaimed as such by, of course, the Nutella website. The whole thing is pathetic. I wonder if any of the contributors, let alone User:CycloneYoris, recognizes what precisely is wrong with the fact that the continent of Africa has one (1) entry, and the US has hundreds--many of them blindly accepting industry links as acceptable sourcing. Add National Popcorn Day to US January holidays[edit]

This page has a "National Popcorn Day" listed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January

That page links "National Popcorn Day" to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_food_days#January

Yet, the destination page does not mention of "national popcorn day"

Three external references to "National Popcorn Day"

https://www.popcorn.org/All-About-Popcorn/Celebrate-Popcorn

https://nationaltoday.com/national-popcorn-day/

https://www.census.gov/newsroom/stories/popcorn-day.html

I think the List of Food days page should have an listing for national popcorn day as January 19 among the other January Holidays.
