redundancy[edit]

Norwood, Ohio, surrounded by Cincinnati, Ohio

In every case listed, the inner and outer cities are of the same State. (A counterexample would be surprising.) So why explicitly name the State twice?

Which is preferable?

Cities with water boundaries?[edit]

Should cities that have all land boundaries surrounded by another city, but have access to a body of water as well count? Example Beaux Arts Village is surrounded on 3 sides by Bellevue, but has access to a lake. BhamBoi (talk) 01:01, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, but that adds a fair amount of subjectivity... Does a town at the end of a peninsula that only has a land boundary with another place count? In the Case of Beaux Arts Village / Bellevue, the city is surrounded on 3 sides, but how much of it can touch water until it doesn't count as surrounded? Per this: Does Watch Hill count, as it only touches Westerly, thus it's only boundary, even if it is only on one side? I don't think so, but again it's subjective... BhamBoi (talk) 02:46, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Disagreement on Austin City Boundaries[edit]

I was trying to find cities to add to this list, so I looked at Austin, Texas to see what cities it surrounds. The map of municipal boundaries from Travis County government shows Austin's boundaries stopping short of Lost Creek and Barton Creek. The problem arises when you look at the municipal maps from City of Austin themselves. They depict the city boundaries reaching out to encircle Lost Creek and Barton Creek, thus making them eligible to be added to this list. But as the County and City seem to have different available data on the city limits of Austin, I don't know which one is correct. Google Maps uses the boundaries defined by the city (surrounding the two aforementioned cities).

Google Maps: (Using City of Austin defined boundaries)

The Travis County map says it was updated in March 9 2022, and I found a news article [https://communityimpact.com/austin/central-austin/city-county/2021/09/15/updated-draft-map-of-austins-redrawn-city-council-boundaries-ready-for-community-review/] saying that the boundaries from City of Austin are from September 2021. The boundaries published on the County website are supposedly newer based off the publication date, but the boundaries from City of Austin are still currently available here. https://www.austintexas.gov/department/gis-and-maps

Lost Creek, Texas links a boundary map in references, but it won't load. Does anyone know if there is a Census Data map to settle this? The towns have areas listed from the Census, so I would assume they know the boundaries. BhamBoi (talk) 19:19, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unincorporated Communities?[edit]

There are unincorporated parcels of land within Orange, California: Orange Park Acres, California, El Modena, California, and Olive, California. They are their own distinct communities that are not in the jurisdiction of Orange City, but still are not incorporated as their own municipalities. Should they be included?

Important question about the scope of this list[edit]

I have been adding every place that appears on the census maps, but that includes all incorporated places and unincorporated CDPs. I have also included some unincorporated places that have defined boundaries within an area, but I have noticed that another editor removed some unincorporated places that I added to the list. Should these places remain on the list? I think it is important because these places still have boundaries so can be confirmed to be surrounded by the other place, and often have have some sort of their own identity so that they can definitely be recognized as a distinct place. Especially the unincorporated CDPs should stay, because they are legally recognized and people from there may likely still have some identity to their place, regardless of their incorporation status. The only concern I have is that the name of the article may need to change and/or have an opening paragraph explaining that all communities with defined boundaries that are surrounded by another can be included.

The more I think about this, I'm conflicted.

On one hand, they are definitely places and they have distinct, defined, boundaries, and they are usually a distinct settlement. But they are unincorporated. That partially goes against the title of this list, which specifies a city. I'm not sure the average reader would notice or know, though. Many CDPs are often their own settlement that functions as its own place with mailing addresses and boundaries, but no government. Again, any consensus?
