Calinaginae[edit]

Hi, I created a page for Calinaginae, I thought that this subfamily is so small that all species can be treated in one page. May be a good idea to link all the references in this page (List of Butterflies of India) for Calinaga species to that page(Calinaginae)?→Carlosp420 23:27, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About the reliability of the present Indian Nymphalid list[edit]

Guys,

  • Firstly, thanks for the interest. We (Shyamal, VirenVaz & AshLin) like wikiaurelians messing around with our stuff.
  • Secondly, thanks for the lovely Clipper illustration :). Funny to think of it being from 'abroad' while we're hunting for it in India, lol, ;).
  • Seriously, this list is nowhere near complete, authentic or reliable. Just don't do anything about it or with it just yet. Shyamal (the stub-starter) took a 'quick and dirty' approach. He dumped an Asian list and asked people to extricate extra-limital species from it. IMHO that this has'nt quite worked out as we had hoped.
  • We've now got an older but more reliable list. In about a week's/month's(?) or two, I hope, I'll be dumping an Evans List (Identification of Indian Butterflies, Brig WH Evans, 2/ed (1932), Bombay Natural History Society.) It still works, only the taxonomic review and corrections will be one helluva job. This list is presently totally unreliable (Sorry, Shyamal).
  • Our Papilionidae, Riodinidae and Pieridae lists are reasonably correct and satisfactory to work on or with. You can mess around there. Lycs, Nymphs lists are NOT! Hesperiidae list, I have'nt a clue, will need a closer look to judge that.
  • In the meantime, please have a 'dekho' at some of our recent output :-
  • By the way as self-appointed steward of Indian Papilionidae, I inspect the ranks of my troops (Indian pap wikipages). So the stubs at top reminds me that this 'soldier' is slovenly and needs to be tackled. So will revert the Papilio (Princeps) krishna butterfly-stub placement.
  • We're spear-heading and completing Paps first while fighting a reaguard action with the other families too. Paps is our proof of concept to the Indian community that an online free/libre/open source field guide to Indian butterflies is relevant, useful, worthwhile and practical. So help us out first with Paps, guys.

Looking forward to continued interaction on the Indian Butterfly Wikibase.

should have been the earlier Dark Blue Tiger. Then what is septentrionis??

Not in the list! Usually all species with common names are in it. As per Evans, three subspp to be found in various parts of Nicobars.

Hey, I just realised leaving the obsolete list on page is misleading. Shyamal, just edited it not realising the structured dump ex Evans, etc is on the Talk page. So, I switched the raw dump ex Evans to main wikipage and brought an old cut and paste here for reference by Viren while doing his Lepindexing. Shyamal, Danaus plexippus is the Monarch and not Plain Tiger which is Danaus chrysippus! AshLin 10:32, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK. $$$ is to indicate species in Evans but not mentioned in your general Oriental Nymph list.

Viren, do the modified dump ex Evans, we know at least, its an accepted Indian list, ie the butterflies are definitely here even if their taxonomy has been reworked up completely. But not until Pierids are completely Lepindexed.

Ackery and Vane Wright themselves wrote a complete taxonomic review of the Milkweeds. The book not only gives taxonomy but zoogeographical region-wise distribution lists. Viren should modify my Evans (improved) list by referring to that work. I have already sent details by email. Its available in BNHS.
I suggest, we leave Euploea alone except for one or two species accounts till we sort out the Mess! Once we identify the species, we leave the list of species pretty much alone because I dont know if there are any major modifications to the field after that. I suspect doing this will not only sort out our problem, but probably reduce and fix the number of species so that the list is reasonably stable for us to not worry about too much. One problem we could face is where to place legacy info ex Wynter-Blyth and Evans. One approach could be that we dont make species pages, except for Common Crow etc, but keep a large genus page.
I could'nt resist sorting out the category mess in 'Butterflies' before I returned to writing mode. Of course it has given me a good look at the territory. Sorry, Viren (wry smile), will get E. core done in two days. OK I got another edit conflict with Shyamal on Commander once again.
