An A-10 of the 81st Fighter Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany crashed near Laufeld, Germany on April 01, 2011 15:45 local time on a routine local training mission.

S-3 Crash in 2002 flying from USS Truman[edit]

Tense[edit]

Forgive me if I am being stupid but I cannot discern any logic in the question of which sentences are in the present tense and which are in the past. Since all these incidents have already happened, can't they just all be in the past tense? To my mind there's something odd, and perhaps slightly pseudo-journalese, about the present-tense ones. I'd rather see it all in the past (and am tempted to change them, if there are no serious objections) but at the very least the article should, surely, be internally consistent. Howdy there - I am one of the primary contributors to this article, having sourced the lion's share of the incidents, and also went to the effort to break it into four sections by era. For this article, I have primarily written of the incidents/accidents in the present tense, describing the event as it unfolds. Most other contributors have followed this lead. Having pretty much cut it out of whole cloth, it has been my stylistic judgement that it reads more easily that way, given that EVERY incident is past tense historically and therefore that is a given. There is no official policy regarding this as far as I know, and you are the only contributor to query the tense style. In the cases where it reads in the past-tense, I would suggest that it will be easier to make them conform to the established style for this article rather than revert all the others to passive voice. Fair enough and thanks very much for the reply. Whilst I personally dislike the present tense I can see your argument for it, and I do agree that consistency is far more important here than personal preference. Incidentally, although I have used the Railway Accidents era blocks as a stylistic guideline for the era breaks, given the higher intensity of aviation accidents, I may have to break the article(s) into more year-block sections, which is something I do not fancy, given the necessity of also realigning the references, as well... I appreciate your kind understanding of my decision of using the present-tense voice in describing the events. I kind of dreaded getting in a mud-fight about my editorial decision... And, as a nod to the higher quality of historical coverage of such accidents displayed by the many fine British aviation publications over American sources, I have also chosen to use Brit speak in describing the details, such as "undercarriage" over "landing gear", and including "port inner" to define the number two engine, for instance. Thanks very much for all that, which I found very interesting. As you probably guessed this is an area about which I don't know very much and I just got interested in the tense thing as a language issue, having stumbled over this article quite by accident. Having just discovered this page some four years after the conversation about tense, I have to say that it seems really odd to use the present tense, and makes the page read more like a cheap TV documentary than an encyclopaedia. Much of Wikipedia is about events which took place in the past, and as such is written in the appropriate tense. what if we try to land a flight by means of parachute.....[edit]

Time to split?[edit]

I propose that this list is split in two, with the current title moving to List of accidents and incidents involving military aircraft (2000–2009) and a new list created for post 2009 accidents at List of accidents and incidents involving military aircraft (2010–present). Space Shuttle was NOT a Military Aircraft?[edit]

I don'd think the Space Shuttle Columbia was a Military Aircraft. It was operated by NASA which is a government agency that is responsible for the civilian space program. It should be listed in only space-related accident lists. Rocketmaniac2 (talk) 04:54, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
