The Williamses of North Carolina[edit]

Robert Overton Williams (1773-1821), Congressman from North Carolina, and Robert Williams (1766-1836), Territorial Governor of Mississippi, I am nearly certain, despite what Political Graveyard says, are not actually the same person, but I'm going only on secondary sources for determining which is which. The question of whether there were two of them, though, is fairly strightforward, since one (NC) is buried in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the other (MS) is buried on his plantation in Ouachita, Louisiana.

They're from the same family, and appear to be first cousins:

Robert Overton Williams, b. 12 Jul 1773 in Caswell County, NC, d. 27 May 1821 in Knoxville, TN while on a visit to his brother Col. John Williams.

He was the son of Col. Joseph Williams, b. 27 Mar 1748 in Hanover County, VA, d. 11 Aug 1827 in Surry County, NC.

Joseph was son of Nathaniel Willams, b. 2 Dec 1712 in Hanover County, VA, d. ca. 1763 in Virginia.

Joseph was brother of Nathaniel Williams, b. 1 Oct 1741 in Hanover County, VA, d. 25 Jan 1805 in Rockingham County, NC.

Nathaniel 2 was father of Robert Williams, b. 30 Oct 1766 in Orange County, NC, d. 25 Jan 1836 in Ouachita, LA.

Hence, first cousins.

There is apparently a good reference on the family entitled Williams: 300 years of leadership in America, which my main source (N. Williams on usgennet.org) uses, but I don't have a copy, and even he manages to list both Robert Williamses as Representatives from North Carolina for exactly the same time period.

I've gone through the main articles and mostly un-conflated the two, but there are specifics that I simply had to omit because I didn't know which they pertained to. I'd just modify the list in this article, too, but that the only existing reference conflates the two men, so I have no confidence someone wouldn't eventualy just wrongly change it back. I'm hoping someone can provide a citable source.
