Organized by publisher?

Should this list be organized by publisher like the novels list? Fostrdv (talk) 16:08, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

No. In fact, I was going to propose that the Novels page be completely reorganized by Series, rather than publisher. Especially now, that there will be so few works from other Publishers. Cnemore (talk) 17:59, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
The novels list is good as is. And I think this article would benefit from a similar org. Fostrdv (talk) 18:27, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
Reorganized by publisher. Whaddya think? Rdzogschen (talk) 20:12, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
me likes. Need good intros for Random House and Simon headings, and its good to go. Wanderer0 (talk) 20:44, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
Wouldn't this be the proper place for the Photo Novels, rather than a separate page? Cnemore (talk) 21:01, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
Done. Rdzogschen (talk) 21:53, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
HOLY PANTS OFF BAT-DOG. How are you so freakishly fast? Sure. The fotonovels info does fit.Wanderer0 (talk) 21:55, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
It's just copy and paste, really. But thanks. Rdzogschen (talk) 22:08, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
I am not comfortable with the photo comics being included, but if the consensus is they remain all is well. Are there any other works? Anyone done a scan of Memory Alpha? Fostrdv (talk) 00:17, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
Checking ISFDB and Memory Alpha. Looks like we have all the in-univ references. Wanderer0 (talk) 02:03, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Chonology recall?

I do not remember the 1993 edition of Star Trek Chonology being recalled, per se. Any sources on this claim? I do know its almost impossible to find a first edition, etc… Fostrdv (talk) 08:38, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Vague recollection of copies being pulled from the shelf and going back to the distributor. But that could've been for any reason, really. Memory Alpha article mentions nothing. Rdzogschen (talk) 12:29, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
I do not recall it being recalled either. I have both versions; the Revised Edition is a substantial update even though it was only three years later.
Is it necessary to include this "recalled" comment?
By the way, the Star Trek Encyclopedia (completely revised and released in 2016 ISBN 978-0-06-237133-1) by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda is perhaps the ultimate source (in book form) of the Star Trek canon Universe and should be included. Another great resource of canon fiction is The Star Trek Book: Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained published by DK (Random House) in 2016. Excellent guide (especially for the novice) to the storylines, races etc. of the Star Trek Universe. Cnemore (talk) 17:19, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Are the Encyclopedia or Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained written from an in-universe perspective? Rdzogschen (talk) 17:32, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
No, but neither is Star Trek Chronology, which has frequent comments and cross-references to episodes that events occurred in. This gave me the impression that you were less strict about what to include than for the Novels page. (BTW: My main objection to The Continuing Missions was that it wasn’t even about the fiction; it was about Gene Roddenberry and the show’s production). If you think all of these real world books describing the fiction should be excluded I’m OK with that.
By the way, Legends of the Ferengi purports to be a book written and told by Quark. It even includes an Introduction by Quark about the publishing of the book. How is this different than the Autobiography books or Enterprise Logs? Cnemore (talk) 18:18, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Never mind about Legends of the Ferengi. I mis-read Quark's Introduction.Cnemore (talk) 18:26, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
I never owned Chronology. If it's more of an encyclopedia versus an in-universe reference like the tech manuals and the other pseudo-fiction, then it belongs on a list of reference works. Fostrdv (talk) 19:43, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Chronology is written from an in-universe perspective. It has copious annotations which are not in-universe. Rdzogschen (talk) 19:46, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
It's not an Encyclopedia but rather a Timeline. It lists each year where something happened and then describes the events.
The reason I wouldn't see it as "In-Universe" is that every paragraph starts with the name of the episode it is summarizing. Also, after or before a listing it might say something like "Just prior to ***Episode". It's replete with Editor's Notes in the text (not in an Annotations section) which explains connections between episodes. I'm Ok with it being included but it doesn't read "In-Universe", especially since each paragraph starts with the name of an episode.Cnemore (talk) 20:37, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

New Page

Well done! The new page looks great. And makes the Novels page much cleaner (by the way, if all illustrated books are to be moved to this page then the “Gibraltar Library Binding” books should also be moved. They are not novels but rather picture books).

I’m sure we’ll list a lot more “in-universe” works as time goes on. One missing is Enterprise Officers Manual by Geoffrey Mandel. (Also, I don’t know if you want to include it, but another unlicensed parody is The Doctor and the Enterprise by Jean Airey.)

As to Star Trek Chronology, whether it's in-universe or not, I'm glad it's included. However, it is not an Encyclopedia; calling it that is misleading. Perhaps change "Encyclopedia" to "Timeline". I'm hoping that it will some day be updated.

I also like the reorganization of the Novels page by Fostrdv, listing the numbered novels separately from the unnumbered novels. It was kind of messy before.Cnemore (talk) 19:12, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Officers Manual and Doctor and the Enterprise are fan-published works as far as I know. Have either been reprinted by a pro-publisher, assigned ISBNs, all that? Wanderer0 (talk) 20:12, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
Gibraltar Library series are illustrated juvenile to middle-grade chapter books. If you remove the illustrations for the two Trek volumes they're roughly 3K words in length. Rdzogschen (talk) 20:32, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
Doctor and the Enterprise is listed on Amazon with ISBN #s 13: 978-1556982187 and 10:1556982186. The Enterprise Officers Manual is listed on Amazon with an Amazon # ASIN: B0026CF2LC but no ISBN listed.Cnemore (talk) 21:29, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
By the gods, THAT book… (I suppose it's notable enough for inclusion.) Rdzogschen (talk) 08:03, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
I hesitate to include, as well, but it was professionally published. Wanderer0 (talk) 08:46, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
We haven't discussed adding fannish works (fan-fiction, etc.) Fostrdv (talk) 12:25, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
It would ruin this page to get into fan-fiction. There's a wiki for Star Trek fan fiction (Star Trek Expanded Universe) with 14,000 pages and even that barely touches the surface!Cnemore (talk) 15:08, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
So limit to professionally published works, etc.? Fostrdv (talk) 15:14, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Yes. Cnemore (talk) 22:20, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Star Trek Adventures (RPG Books)

I think there's actually other books in this series including:

Feedback from New Page Review process

I left the following feedback for the creator/future reviewers while reviewing this article: Thank you for this informative new article, though I am not sure it is titled correctly. The works are obviously "fictional" because Star Trek is a work of fiction already. I believe this list would be better described as "derivative works" -- a common copyright term for materials and merchandise that follow after the major creative works (those being the TV series and movies in this case)..

---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 20:10, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Howdy! I think Rdzogschen or Wanderer0 opted for fictional works because this list is focused on tie-in fiction that is not novels. Fostrdv (talk) 20:55, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
I believe doomsdayer520 does have a point. Is there a better *title? Rdzogschen (talk) 08:35, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
How about: List of Star Trek tie-in works? Wanderer0 (talk) 01:56, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
That may be too broad. Rdzogschen (talk) 04:59, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

List of Star Trek fictional worksList of Star Trek tie-in fiction – The title fictional works is ambiguous and misleading. The Star Trek franchise is a work of fiction, etc. The works listed in the article include in-universe references and biographies, as well as photo comics, children's picture books, and original audiobooks. These works do not align with the already massive list of novels, or any potential list of reference works or comics. I believe List of Star Trek tie-in fiction is more appropriate. Thosbsamsgom (talk) 22:43, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

  • SUPPORT --tie-in-- is far more appropriate than --fictional--. Fostrdv (talk) 00:19, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Support alternate move to List of Star Trek tie-in fiction. More WP:PRECISE than "works" which can encompass anything.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 00:34, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Support Tie-in fiction is good. Wanderer0 (talk) 20:07, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Support. Yeah the current title is unclear. Proposed title is good. An alternative could be "...tie-in works".  Bait30  Talk 2 me pls? 03:55, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
