Recipe for Editing NRHP articles, especially ones that are NHLs[edit]

I had developed a section here, but moved it to User:Doncram/Recipe. I didn't know about user pages before, and didn't know where to create it. It was not talk about the NYS NHLs per se. doncram 01:30, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikilinking city names[edit]

Some cities in the list are wikilinked and others are not. For encyclopedic consistency, shouldn't ALL cities be wikilinked. Alternatively, don't wikilink any of the cities. Truthanado 23:28, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. Also, of the wikilinks, some go to the given city article, some go to a list of NRHP properties in that city. But the whole list will get put into a wikitable soon, hopefully. doncram 17:34, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tabular Presentation of New York NYLs[edit]

Dmadeo went ahead and put the list into table form. Needed to be done. Not there yet in terms of appearance, but good to get started. I miss the numbering of sites, as I am visiting them in sequence to edit in NRHP text and photo links. I think one column, or one row in each entry, should show the official National Historic Landmark name for the site, rather than the common name which may be the wikipedia article name for the site. Probably a column for NHL date. We should look to the featured list on Chicago landmarks, as one model. doncram 15:24, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And I like how there are tabules by type, and then lists by region, in List of Canadian national parks. Perhaps the NYS NHL list could be grouped by Properties vs. Ships. Then listed also by area (New York City; Hudson River Valley counties; Western New York; Central New York, in 10 or so groupings). doncram 15:55, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I put a third column in for county and wikid all the town names. I'm not sure how much more organizations I'd put in... dm 03:57, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I like what you have been doing, now i see you are adding photos... I made another pass through all the articles to check/fix display of NHL date in NRHP infobox, if the article has an NRHP infobox. The whole set of articles and its list are becoming more and more presentable. doncram 13:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Too bad wikitable sortable doesnt seem to really work though :( dm 14:48, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wikitable sorting seems to work now. The date column doesn't sort right, given two day-month and year fields. If it was just year, that would be okay and sortable. I like having the precise date though, then how to make it sortable? There must be a single year-month-day date format that will sort properly...From Help:Date_formatting_and_linking, midway down, it seems [YYYY-MM-DD] format is only easily sortable option. I'll try playing in the NYS (non-NYC) article now. doncram 18:55, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe its me, but I cant sort the county column either... dm 02:53, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, it's Safari on the Macosx dm 04:28, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't get that last reference. But date sorting works now, using dates formatted as "04 Apr" "2005" and/or as "04 Apr", "2005". The wikitable sorting algorithm is rather fragile otherwise, currently, but this works. doncram 19:49, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

split off the state historic sites into its own list?[edit]

we crossed the size limit... dm 22:35, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can't imagine the text list of SHSs is very big, file-size-wise. But I don't object to splitting off the list of SHSs at bottom into its own list, if you want to do that as an editorial matter. BTW, there is already a page listing NYS parks, NYS SHSs and some other type of listable thing that wasn't related to SHSs, like recreation areas or something. I felt the SHSs relate closely to the NHLs as I was observing a lot of overlap. Hmm, they would overlap even more with the list of NRHPs. Maybe it should be a list on its own. doncram 16:40, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Say more about what you mean about size limits, what are our constraints. Has the page reached a certain file-size, due to the photographs, say? The size of the NYS NHL list may itself be unwieldy. Ah, did you mean to split the main list of NHL's, not merely move away the cross-reference list at bottom? If so, not sure if SHS vs. non-SHS is the right split. For example, perhaps Ships vs. Historical Districts vs. Homes vs. Buildings that are not primarily homes? There could remain a need for a master text list like the list was before the table editing started. (However there have been detail edits of links within table, so am not proposing going back to prior version, I would not want to lose those edits). doncram 16:40, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Daniel Case suggested elsewhere that the NYS NHL list be split into NYC vs. non-NYC. I'm not sure what would suffice, in terms of how many rows can there be in a table-format list having photographs, so splitting in two might not be enough. What about 4 or 5 big geographic areas of the state? How many chunks, how many rows per chunk. doncram 16:59, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I could see that, almost 1/3 of the list is NYC landmarks... The limit is the 30k warning you'll see when you edit dm 02:29, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I might go beyond just an NYC-only list and suggest a Manhattan-only list as well. 85 NHLs is a lot more than some states; indeed, more than some states combined.

But other than that I see no need for divisions at this point. NYC definitely; other regions, wait and see. Daniel Case 18:53, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I broke out NYC... dm 02:29, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The results, both the NYC and the rest of NYS, look good. Glad to see this is really moving along. doncram 18:55, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Woohoo! Looks like it's done[edit]

Daniel Case, Doncram and I seem to have finished off the NYS and NYC lists. Great job guys, it looks a lot better. dm 01:53, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, "done" is a relative term. :) I think we can be real proud of how it is looking though. Any thoughts on what more should be done, if anything, before nominating for Good or Featured article status? doncram 19:44, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strange dates[edit]

What's all this "1963-05-23 was May 23, 1963" stuff in the date column? Is it supposed to mean anything? Matt 01:59, 20 October 2007 (UTC).

It was supposed to sort better, I've been removing the "was" part and leaving just the 1963-05-23 dm 09:04, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about leaving that date stuff messed up for so long. All fixed now, using a date format that wikitable software sorts properly now. doncram 19:36, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can u make that into a table? It's a useful tally. FYI, I'll add photos for some NHLs in Herkimer, Madison, Otsego counties soon. doncram (talk) 20:14, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Note Cg-realms just filled one of those Albany pic gaps. And note Lvklock has recently filled 2 or 3 others in Cayuga and perhaps other counties. I think both are new wikipedians. doncram (talk) 01:38, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving talk is needed[edit]

The old discussions on this talk page oughta get archived, to clean up this place for peer review / good article review / featured list review etc., and just to keep it friendlier. At least the 5 or 8 first topics are really old threads. How does one do archiving? If you just opened a subpage named archive1, then cut and pasted the material, it would not move the edit history. Is edit history always/sometimes/ever moved into archived discussions? Please enlighten... doncram (talk) 02:02, 20 January 2008 (UTC) P.S. I need to archive my own user talk page, too, i know.[reply]

I added an archive box. You can copy and paste the older stuff from here to there. Make sure you delete it from this page once it's added to the archive. All the old edit history remains here, but that's fine. Automatic archiving can even be set up, but don't think the page needs that, 'cause it's not super-busy. Hope that helps. --Ebyabe (talk) 02:16, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for setting that up, and for the info. This will be fine. I just archived several discussion threads. doncram (talk) 03:26, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're quite welcome! I don't think the page was really that bad, honestly, compared to some I've seen. However, I can't ever fault anyone for wanting to organize stuff, doncha know. :) -Ebyabe (talk) 03:37, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
