A Question about Gentlemen Ushers[edit]

I have a rather dumb question for the experts here. Did clergymen ever serve as gentlemen ushers, or was that strictly verboten? Many thanks in advance. Regards,MarmadukePercy (talk) 06:07, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know that it was explicitly forbidden, but I don't know of any examples. Especially in later years, when the office became something of a sinecure (Long Pole Wellesley got the office so that he could enjoy the Royal Household's immunity to arrest for debt), and it would make more sense to appoint a clergyman to a clerical sinecure, rather than a lay one like this. Since 1901, the ushers have generally been ex-military. Choess (talk) 13:47, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
