Article title[edit]

Minor point, but shouldn't the title of this article be "L'étranger series" per MOS? Pinging User:Lullabying as the article's primary author. Morgan695 (talk) 04:48, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At this point I'm not sure what the article should be titled. The first book was licensed in English as The Stranger By the Beach. lullabying (talk) 05:06, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I revised the intro to note the English title. I typically err on the side of naming manga articles by whatever their English-language title is, but per MOS:AM, "If there are multiple official titles, use the one that is best known and that has contributed most to the work's becoming known in the broader English-speaking world." Since the article is covering the series itself rather than a specific title, I think "L'étranger series" is fine. Citations 2 and 3 don't seem to be using "series" as a proper noun when discussing the manga, so if it's fine with you, I'll move the article to "L'étranger series". I wonder if the best title would simply be "Umibe no Étranger". I understand the reasoning of a title that tries to accommodate the sequel manga as well, but I think for titling purposes it should be a matter of prominence (see the highly-prominent film that ANN always calls "Umibe no Étranger" in its reporting). I see jawiki differs on this point, but we don't need to follow them. — Goszei (talk) 08:16, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It was licensed as The Stranger By the Beach by Renta! and later Seaside Stranger by Seven Seas Entertainment. The Japanese name is L'étranger de la Plage. lullabying (talk) 08:20, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: perhaps a semi-analogous case is Monogatari, which was titled "Bakemonogatari" on enwiki until August 2013, only after Second Season started airing. The Stranger By the Beach or Seaside Stranger could work as titles under this paradigm of "most prominent media", though that seems problematic with regards to the movie. I see L'étranger de la Plage on the volume covers and in the Japan Times review ([1]), but not in other English outlets. Crunchyroll and ANN strangely use "du" instead of "de la" in their reporting. Umibe no Étranger (which ANN uses) could work under the similar precedents of Hidamari Sketch, which was moved from the lesser-known license title of "Sunshine Sketch", or Hajime no Ippo from Fighting Spirit, etc. — Goszei (talk) 08:33, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Goszei: The reason why "du" was used in "de la" was because the original promotional materials for the film used "du" before it got subsequently corrected to "de la." lullabying (talk) 20:04, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Description of plot correct?[edit]

Since the premiere of the movie is coming nearer there are more discussions about the manga and movie online. On Twitter were some assumptions about Shun making advances to Mio when he was a minor. Like it is decribed in this article. I don't remember it that way (reading the German translation). Other people seemed to have the same impression. @Lullabying: What is the source for the plot description? The manga (English version?) or the drama CD to which the footnote refers to? --Don-kun (talk) 12:00, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Don-kun: Northern Moonlight seems to have changed it using literal translations from the book's summary, which is acceptable. lullabying (talk) 20:05, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Don-kun: I also have to point out the people in the Twitter thread you linked were probably not going to watch the series anyway regardless of the nature of the relationship because they're still hung up over the characters' ages when they first met. lullabying (talk) 21:32, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I know but nevertheless the plot should be described correctly. --Don-kun (talk) 08:49, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I propose merging The Stranger by the Shore into L'étranger series due to overlap and WP:WITHIN. Reviews for the film are already listed on this page as are the summary and the cast. A merger would not cause a significant change to the original article as most of the information is there already. lullabying (talk) 01:28, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
