Disputed[edit]

The cited work states:

In the same year the son of Balanos Vassilopoulos, who claimed to have solved the famous problem of the duplication of the cube presented his book Antipelargises47 [sic] in which the author also describes his attempts to gain support for his solution amongst the international community of mathematicians, in particular Euler and the members of the St Petersburg Academy.48

I believe this means it was the father Balanos Vasilopoulos who claimed to have solved the problem and who sought Euler's support. The son Kosmas opposed the father's theory. See also Michael Lambrou. This seems clear-cut so I have changed the text accordingly.

Also, this article gives "Vienna, 1816" for the posthumous publication of Οδός Μαθηματική (Mathematical Processes), but the article Balanos Vasilopoulos has a citation for its publication in 1749. As "Vienna, 1816" corresponds to the publication of Kosmas' Antipelargesis, I have removed the line for Οδός Μαθηματική. - Fayenatic (talk) 19:41, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, the hook was based on a mis-reading of the source, actually 'in his work Antipelargisis K. Balanos rejected his father's claims that he solved the dblcation of the cube.' About his notability, wp:academic might be problematic here (maybe because he was a very conservative scholar), but the general notability criteria are met (wide coverage from various independent sources as an influencial personality during his era).
