Oddly, the Korean gochu chili pepper has become a point of contention in nationalistic debates. There has been an attempt to introduce "evidence" that varieties of the Capsicum annum pepper were present in Korea prior to the 17th century, which is not supported by evidence. Many edits cite an article from Volume 1 Issue 1 of the Journal of Ethnic Foods (accessed on Sciencedirect.com) which to my knowledge is not a peer-reviewed reputable journal. Edits here on Wikipedia based on that article make patently absurd claims that the Korean pepper independently evolved on the Korean peninsula "billions of years ago," and self-contradictorily also claims that the pepper was introduced to Korea by birds that flew all the way from South America some thousands of years ago.
