Initial notes[edit]

This topic is of course related to Canal of the Pharaohs, its predecessor, but given that for most of its history the Cairo canal was very different in nature and function from the ancient canal (whose function is closer to the Suez Canal today) and that reliable (English) sources consistently call it the Khalij and not anything else, it seemed more useful in the long-term to just create a new article about the Khalij, focusing on its role in the history of Cairo.

I picked "(Cairo)" as the disambiguator in the title, but there may be other options for disambiguation that editors prefer. Suggestions and feedback are welcome. R Prazeres (talk) 03:48, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Comment: I'm open to adjustments on wording. I've written "1890s" instead of a specific year because various sources date the filling of the canal to 1896, 1897, or 1898 (see article and additional citations there) and the second source here indicates it took place over a few years.
