Citation needed for the 5,000 number. Seems highly implausible, since the entire population of Milwaukee at the time was a little over 20,000. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.129.91.186 (talk) 18:35, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So what exactly were the circumstances that made Wisconsin declare the Fugitive Slave Act unconsitutional? The article just says it but doesn't explain... I'm interested to know. 134.114.231.38 07:53, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Summary (from memory): For one thing, the Constiution for the United States does not give Congress the authority to dictate how the slaves would be returned; ergo, that is left to the states. The alledged slaves were also not allowed due proccess. [1], which is linked to from the Sherman Booth article, briefly goes over this. Also related (but again, more related to Booth) is one of the resolutions from the state legislature and an overview in State Documents on Federal Relations. Please feel free to expand the article if you'd like... when I wrote the initial stub I intentionally did so in a mannor that made it easy to insert a history/background in between the introduction and summary paragraphs. :) 72.131.44.247 23:13, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
