Lin Jong → Jong Lin
Lin Jong (footballer) → Lin Jong

– For the cinematographer whose surname is "Lin", "Jong" is an English name and not his Chinese given name, probably first used when he was attending Tisch School of the Arts in the U.S., therefore the WP:NC-ZH surname-first convention doesn't apply. Rather, his Chinese given name is "Liang-chung" or "Liangzhong" (pinyin). He is usually credited as "Jong Lin" in Chinese-language films when just about everyone else (who did not study or live in western countries like him) has their surnames listed first (in the Latin alphabet). I think this is clear indication he wants to be credited in the west in that naming order and/or name. IMDB, which often blindly reverses Asian names without much research to conform to their surname-last convention, then lists him as "Lin Jong" as if his surname is "Jong".

If this sounds too confusing, just look at Google search results:

"Jong Lin" + cinematographer -wikipedia = 2150 results
"Lin Jong" + cinematographer -wikipedia = 1210 results

But the Aussie footballer (whose surname is Jong, an S/E Asian variant of Yang (surname)) should really be WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for "Lin Jong" per overwhelming Google search results. --Relisted. George Ho (talk) 06:05, 1 July 2015 (UTC) Timmyshin (talk) 18:22, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

- WP:UE means "use the name which is most common in English sources as opposed to French sources or Indonesian sources", not "prefer a Semitic name over a Sinitic name just because more Anglophones have the former name". There's lots of English WP:RS for searches of "Jong Lin" in conjunction with narrowing terms like "Bend it like Beckham", "Ang Lee", etc; almost none for "Josh Lin" in conjunction with same. Support moving cinematographer to Jong Lin per nominator and WP:COMMONNAME. E.g. there are about 455 GHits for "Ang Lee" "Lin Jong" (with a decent amount of reliable sources), but about 4x that many for "Ang Lee" "Jong Lin" (examples of WP:RS include New York Times New York Magazine). 58.176.246.42 (talk) 04:26, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
- To be clear (belatedly), I also support moving footballer to Lin Jong. Based on search results he's pretty clearly the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC by usage for the string "Lin Jong" (e.g. if you search for that in Google every single result on the first page is about football), and any residual confusion can be cleared up by a {{for}} hatnote on his article. 58.176.246.42 (talk) 07:49, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
