American businessperson?[edit]

I think that Phipps would be surprised to hear that he was categorised as an American. He was born and died in the UK; his business may have had an American office, but traded principally between Rio and Liverpool; he married an Englishwoman; his principal residence was in the UK; he was a British subject; he had a number of official English capacities (eg MP for Westbury and High Sheriff of Wiltshire).
