'British' Nobel laureate category.[edit]

I'm removing this. As the article says, he is Irish. As he is from NI, he can hold both British and Irish citizenship. The person adding the category says Hume is a British citizen - I'd like to see a citation for that, please. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 15:57, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I note your comment. "The official designated nationality of the people of the United Kingdom is British", See British. Hume was born and has lived most of his life in Northern Ireland, part of the UK. He has served as a member of the British parliament, for which he must be a British citizen. He holds, or is entitled to hold, a British passport. In fact, there is no indication in the article that he also holds Irish citizenship, but if he did, it still does not preclude him from being "British". The category "British noble laureates", as stated in the introduction to the category, "contains Nobel laureates who are, or were, British or have a close association with the United Kingdom", and adds that "Laureates who are, or were, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish (or are closely associated with Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) are also listed in the the appropriate subcategory". In the List of Nobel laureates by country, Hume is listed under "United Kingdom and, as for a citation, in the official Nobel Website at http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1998/, his country of nationality is given as "United Kingdom", there being no reference at all to Ireland. Whilst Hume may, possibly, not like being British (presumably preferring all Ireland to be part of the Republic), he is nevertheless British and, in awarding him the Nobel Prize, the Nobel Committee considered him as such. The article is also wrong, as people from Northern Ireland are entitled to hold Irish or British citizenship, or both - see the Belfast Agreement.[3] "He holds, or is entitled to hold, a British passport." Which is it? Source? As regards the categories - didn't you write most of the criteria yourself? Yes, the Nobel website lists him as being from the UK, because Northern Ireland is part of the UK. There can be no doubt that Hume is a British citizen, whether he "holds" a British passport or not. He was born in the UK. It is very likely that he is also a ROI citizen. Surely whether or not Hume has British citizenship is largely irrelevent (although there appears to be no reference to him as having Irish citizenship, let alone solely Irish citizenship.) His place of birth was in the UK, where he appears to have lived most of his live. This alone is justification for the British category, which should be added back. So a retired Irish nationalist politician is British whether he wants to be or not, despite no evidence presented showing what citizenship he holds?! Broadly speaking, everyone born in the UK, whether or not they are an Irish nationalist politician, retired or otherwise, is British whether he or she wants to be or not. That's the normal way of things in most countries. If you read the relevant UK legislation, you'll see this. "Parity of esteem" is nothing to do with it, and no-one is suggesting that he shouldn't also be included in a category of Irish Nobel laureates. Mooretwin (talk) 13:51, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Insisting someone is British when they are an Irish nationalist, just so they can be included in a British category? Come on. Parity of esteem has everything to do with it! And no, sorry, if you actually read the relevant UK and indeed Irish legislation, you'll find you're mistaken as regards people born in Northern Ireland.
