Re: the comment about Dingell's power pre-Gingrich - I normally hate doing an appeal to anonymous authority like that, but on the other hand, as a sometime Congress junkie, there's no doubt in my mind that in the Bush 41 admin. and the first two years of Clinton, Dingell's clout was up there with Foley, Gephardt, Rosty, Moakley and possibly the chair of Appropriations (Whitten or Natcher). I agree with you. The 'Almanac of American Politics 2000' states that "From 1981-95 Dingell was chairman of...one of the most powerful and effective chairmen ever." It goes on to substantiate that claim. Congressional Quarterly's 'Politics in America 2004' states "As Energy and Commerce chairman, Dingell built a remarkable fiefdom, running the committee with an iron fist and becoming a potent symbol of the Old Bull Democratic chairmen who made life miserable for the minority." It goes on to say "Many Republicans hated his imperious style, but they saw him as a leadership model to emulate when they took control..." mp2dtw 22:42, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

POV

I added the POV tag to the environmental performance section. The only reference for the substantial paragraph that uses words such as "craven" is a WSJ editorial...not the best source. I'd point to this week's editorial in Science that described Dingell's environmental performance/consistency as less than stellar. Also, I object to the statement regarding the automobile industry shouldering an "unfair" burden vis-a-vis global warming--automobiles create substantial amounts of GHGs. Also the section "private sector ties" had been removed by the suspicious omission of a slash. I've rectified this. -- Autumninjersey 22:24, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Bias?

I read this page and with the exception of hinting to his ties with the auto industry, the page seemed like it was written by one of his staff.

Entirely agreed. Unlike all other influential political figures' articles, this one distinctly lacks a Criticism section. Although it would never meet NPOV standards, it is entirely fair to say Dingell is a stooge of the industry and its unions and his opposition to CAFE improvements should be noted highlighted and expanded. Cheney & house seniority

What does it mean that former VP Dick Cheney, a member of the House earlier in his career, preceded Dingell in House seniority?

That means that in terms of honorary processions or protocol, Cheney as a former Vice President would be ahead of Dingell in Dingell's role as Dean of the House.

Two things

One, I'm very disappointed that Dingell didn't sponsor any legislation with Marion Berry before the latter left Congress. America really needed the Dingell-Berry Act. Right-edge biography very confusing

Read it yourself, and answer: did he enter Congress in 1955 or 1965 or 1981 or 1995?

The top "In Office:" item should should all Congressional service dates combined. Multiple entries there should only occur when there was a break in service from Congress. Then if you want to do all those breakdowns, insert a divider line, step down a font and continue with the lesser breakdowns.

Also, really: what kind of nonsense is listing the top item of his biography as "Dean of" ?? The critical encyclopedic aspect of a Congressperson is ... Congress. Civics exams ask about constituency of the U.S. Congress - not who chaired the Committee on ______.
