Both? No, only one: CBE stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and OBE for Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Ancestry

I have removed the line "Cleese's ancestors originally come from Wales, where some of his distant family still live." Neither of the two sources cited in support (a page on "Everything2" and a Rolling Stone article called "John Cleese's Towering Legacy") makes any mention of any Welsh ancestry.Shiresman (talk) 00:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

I found an unknown (to me) short film with & by Cleese: "The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know it." It is 55 minutes, released by White Star video and was produced by Shearwater Films. 1977. Written by Jack Hobbs, Joseph McGrath, John Cleese. Stars Cleese, Connie Booth, Stratford Johns and several other well known British actors. The plot has Cleese as Sherlock Holmes' grandson sent to solve the crime of Moriarty's grandchild. Current life

What is he doing now?

He lives not in Santa Barbara, but in the hills above it. He lives in Montecito, California. I actually stayed overnight in the house right next door to him. His neighbor says that he is really cool.

I found no reference to depression in the Article, much less a clinical diagnosis of one.

On TBS's ads "to determine what's funny", John Cleese is the guy in the lab coat throwing oranges at the guy in underwear, is he not? I am sure that was him, if it wasn't then it was his twin.

"Many considered this to be the perfect tribute to his friend and comic partner." - when talking about the Chapman eulogy. In my mind, "comic" means "funny". Other use of the "Kim Bread" alias

It may be worth noting that when Cleese agreed to appear in City of Death, he asked the Radio Times to be credited as Kim Bread, and they declined. Anyone who knew this also knew that "Kim Bread" in Starship Titanic WAS indeed Cleese (which Adams later admitted anyway). John Cleese appears in this commercial, which can be accessed here: http://www.backuptrauma.com/ It seems to me that this commercial is significant for being the first (only?) commercial to [i]exclusively[/i] make use of the internet as an advertising medium but I'm not qualified to judge this. Books section?

Wouldn't it help to list his two books with Robin Skynner, "The Rectorial Address of John Cleese" and other script books like "The Strange Case of the End of Civilisation As We Know It" and "Faulty Towers", with edtition and ISBN, like we find at Terry Jones' article (or maybe also some of his great articles on comedy) in a separate section after filmography? "Don't want to read the biography? Tough luck!" OK, it's absolutely John Cleese style, but still they would be more obvious for some hasty seeker looking for them in particular. I have tried to find some possible connection of Cleese to the Bedknobs and Broomsticks film (the original book is too old to even consider). Provided that John Cleese has given all kinds of statements to the press, Gazzalon's entry might be correct. Yet I couldn't find the London Times interview to verify. Cleese/Cheese?

You can't use everything2 as a reference! Anyway, if JC's father joined the army in 1915, that would mean he was at least 40 when JC was born (far from impossible, but unlikely). It was John's FATHER that changed Cheese to Cleese when he joined the army. It's quoted by John Cleese in the book: "The Pythons On The Pythons" ( their official autobiography. ). He's also stated it in numerous filmed interviews. His biography needs splitting up. At the moment, all information about his life is in one big chunk. Cleese and "I Po"

Cleese, in one of his management series of training videos, used the term "I Po" to describe "putting an idea on the table that had just popped into his head, without any ownership, so that it could be discussed without hurting people's feelings". The idea probably originated with De Bono, but I am trying to track down the CLeese film in which it was included. Religion

This page has no mention of religion, and it should considering the attention Life of Brian got. In a documentary on it, Cleese says "I'd been confirmed and I'd sat around for some weeks expecting some golden globe to descend on me, and when it didn't I became fairly atheistical-humanitistic." Hollywood Bowl

Not quite sure how to address this , so rather than change the article , I'll drop the info. here , and the page organizer may do with it as he/she wishes. John Cleese appeared with Monty Python at The Hollywood Bowl in late September of 1980 - I was there - the FILM was released in 1982. The main article doesn't reference "Film" or "Actual Performance" . Which leads to confusion and people still thinking they were there in 1982. Yeah , one digit. Criticism

If one is going to include a criticism section on Eric Idle, one must also be included on John Cleese

That is a fair comment. However, unless somebody somewhere has already something in the pipeline and intends to make it an early entry under that section, I rather feel that throwing an empty "Criticism" section into the air would be open to misinterpretation. Not to mention an encouragement for spurious contributions. Graham Chapman

Citizenship?

It would, if I am not mistaken, be illegal for Cleese to give money to Barack Obama's campaign if he (Cleese, I mean) wasn't a U.S. citizen. (Though, it would be legal for him to work for Obama without being a citizen.) Did Cleese become a U.S. citizen at some point? It's covered by this sentence: Towards the end of 2009 and into 2010, Cleese appeared in a series of television adverts for the Norwegian electric goods shop chain, Elkjøp. "Acrobat" mother

I don't think Cleese's mother was an acrobat. I remember him being interviewed on the NPR show "Fresh Air," and when Terry Gross mentioned that his mother was an acrobat, he burst out laughing. Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy) was performed at the Royal Albert Hall on 23 October 2009. John Cleese was the only surviving Python who did not attend.[3] Various reasons have been given for this.[4]--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 04:57, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

The Muppet Show?

The Post-Python section here has a (fairly long) sub-secton on Cleese's appearance on the Muppet Show in 1977, which was added in this series of edits about five years ago. Does anybody know why? Was the appearance of particular significance to his career, or to the development of the Muppet Show itself? Atheist category

Re this edit: In a March 2015 interview, Cleese said "I certainly don't think much of organized religion. I am not committed to anything except the vague feeling that there is something more going on than the materialist reductionist people think." Regarding his 'height', the figures are the same as Douglas Adam's, any coicindence/typos?

Father's name Cheese

The claim that "His family's surname was originally Cheese, but his father had thought it was embarrassing and changed it when he enlisted in the Army during World War I" is uncited. I added an IMDB reference which supports the claim, however this was reverted as "IMDb isn't suitable for BLP sourcing". The Cheese name change appears in various places, but it needs a reliable source. Sometimes these things get repeated even if they are not true, and IMDb is not suitable if a BLP claim is likely to be challenged. IMDb is similar to Wikipedia. Fan sites and other wikis are not reliable sources. Also, their content can change over time. I did have a look for a more suitable source mentioning this, but couldn't find one. This may well be true, but as I said above, it needs reliable sourcing, which there isn't online. Also it's more on topic for the article about the film. Surname pronunciation

The article currently gives the pronunciation of Cleese as /kliːz/

Do we have a source for this? Because I've always heard his name as being pronounced /kliːs/

S or Z, now there's a question. It may depend to some extent on the speaker. IPA is never an exact science and is usually given when there is a risk of the name being mispronounced. You're right that Parkinson pronounces it with a /z/ and I've just watched a BBC clip where the presenter pronounces his name with a /z/ too when she introduces him.
