"flea-ridden, piddling, stinking, scratching, rotten little things"[edit]

And former Tourism Minister John Brown sparked a national outcry by branding koalas (OK, so they're not bears but many Americans think they are!) as "flea-ridden, piddling, stinking, scratching, rotten little things". http://www.theage.com.au/national/house-on-the-hill-20080618-2sxa.html
wasn't this because he was "scratched and peed on by a koala he was cuddling for the cameras"? http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/66970-oz-koala-cartoon--jim-russell-c-1985

so maybe it is understandable, if the context is provided. Also note such complaints are not isolated:

"Having a koala urinate on you isn't pleasant -- especially if it puts you at risk of getting chlamydia." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/23/koala-chlamydia-one-direction_n_1447490.html
