Lost Album

I think Buffett's biography could be expanded. I think his "lost" album ("High Cumberland Jubilee") is somewhat neglected. --Mauvila

I would rather it be done by someone who knows more than I about it. I have lapsed as a member of the Church of Buffett, and I know that there are thousands of Buffett fanatics who know all about the topic. I'm just surprised they have not added more. Mauvila 01:53, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Stuff that might need to be added:

  • Don't stop the carnival stuff;
  • I'm pretty sure he's wrecked two planes;
  • His business empire (restaurants, etc.);
  • Statistics on his concert popularity;
  • Basically, anything that the 60 minutes piece has said.

This statement needs research or amending. "He later married his first wife, Margie Washichek" . . . Jimmy's wife's name is Jane Buffett. I think he married Margie, got divorced, then married Jane, split from her for a while and then got back together. That's why Savannah's middle name is Jane. This info can be found in A Pirate Looks at 50. I just don't have my book at the moment.

I am surprised that his parrot air force is not mentioned. He owns or has owned, quite a number of really intersting planes, and many have been displayed at air shows (EAA's Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Fla, for example). He is quite an aviation enthusiast and well known in aviation circles.

Do we really need the excruciating detail about what songs are and aren't played at each concert? Especially when each playlist "rule" has multiple exceptions?

New article

I recall a concert in the late '70s at the Greek Theatre in Berkley. Jimmy said he had written "Come Monday" at a motel in San Anselmo, across the bay from Berkley in Marin County. He had just spent some time in L.A. (four lonely days I'm guessing).

East Bay or West?

UPDATE to Hometown

During a recent concert replay on Sirius Radio, Jimmy stated that he grew up in Fairhope on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. The concert was from 11/05/2001 in Atlanta, and he stated this right before he played "When the Coast is Clear" during the second set. Audio clip verification might possibly be obtained via Radio Margaritaville or Sirius if needed.

I found in Buffett's autobiography, "A Pirate Looks at Fifty," where he states on page 402, "...when I think about home, I think about Pascagoula and the eastern shore of Mobile Bay..." I still would like to know exactly which town he grew up in, whether it's Spanish Fort, Daphne, or Fairhope. I also made some changes to the wording of where he went to high school. Recently Buffett's hometown was changed from Mobile to Daphne on this entry. Can anyone verify this change? Homeport, the home where his parents lived the last 30 years of their life, is located in Fairhope, south of Daphne. In some of his books, Buffett has mentioned Spring Hill, but it is never stated he actually grew up there. Does anyone know exactly which side of the bay Buffett grew up on? He's always said Mobile, which is technically on the West side of the bay. Homeport was Daphne, then Fairhope. Now it's no where I guess, unless you count Lulu's.MylesFOmaha 03:56, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I used to live within walking distance of "Homeport". I would consider it to be in Daphne. Daphne is on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. McGill is over in Mobile. Part of the confusion may be that if you live in Daphne, you most likely work, shop, etc in Mobile. So, if someone from another part of the country asked where you were from you might say Mobile, since Daphne is pretty much a bedroom community of Mobile. If you've heard Buffett say he was from Mobile instead of Daphne, that might be why. Crash of his seaplane "Lady of the Waters"

Buffett has a vivid, multi-page description of what could have been a fatal accident in his Grumman Widgeon seaplane. On take-off near Nantucket, the left wing hit a wake, snapped off, and led to a crash. He credits Naval Survival Training with saving his life. It's in his book A Pirate Looks at Fifty, which is considered autobiographical. This could be put in the article. The book mentions a date of August 25th 1994. Bigmac31 21:14, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

If there's a section about a drug search, there should certainly be a section about his plane getting shot at over jamacia. I don't know enough about the incident to write a summary, but it is at least as notable as a drug search

Name Rip-off Joints

I've heard Buffett recently sued a number of independent hamburger joints that called themselves "Cheesburgers in Paradise", including one around my way. Does anybody know the details and or results? (my local place is still open, AFAIK). Tuf-Kat 19:58, Oct 15, 2004 (UTC)

There are a number of Buffett-rip-off joints. I know of Margueritaville in Montego Bay, Jamaica, spelled differently than Buffett's chain.

In Frederick, Maryland there was a resturant that allegedly had to do a name change due to J.B.'s trademark. J.G.

I used to work at Greenburg Traurig, the mega-law firm headquarterd in Miami (who at the time called themselves "the sweatshop of Miami"). Every week, it seemed, I would read on our internal website of yet another cease-and-desist letter going out to some poor chump in Idaho who thought it would be clever to call his bar "Margaritaville" or name a menu item "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Jimmy may be a laid back island party dude, but mess with his trademarks, and he'll bring the nastiest Attorneys on the planet down on your neck. In a recent article, it has been noted that some developers have located the wreckage of the Chiquimula, the craft captained by Buffett's grandfather (and referred to in a number of his songs). Any thoughts on where to place a quick paragraph and link.

Under "List of Tours" it appears that the "Cheeseburger in Paradise" title has been changed to "foodburger in Paradise." Having been around during that time, and having the ticket stubs to substantiate it, I am pretty sure someone made a mistake here. I think this article needs some TLC by an editor. For example, the first paragraph is a mouthful and contains unnecessary words and is not organized well. Its sentences should be broken up and reorganized. It could say:

"James William "Jimmy" Buffett (born December 25, 1946) is a singer, songwriter, author, businessman, and movie producer. He is best known for his music, which often portrays an "island escapism" lifestyle. Together with his Coral Reefer Band, Buffet's musical hits include "Margaritaville" (No. 234 on RIAA's list of "Songs of the Century"), and "Come Monday". He has a devoted base of fans known as "Parrotheads". "

If it needs to be noted that he is from Mississippi (I do not think it is important) such facts should be its own sentence and the statement qualified. "He is a native of the Mississippi and Alabama Gulf coasts but now lives in Palm Beach, Florida." Geodanny (talk) 20:28, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Jamaican incident

The description of this incident is entirely unsourced, and seemingly contradicts this Belfast Telegraph article by saying that Buffett and Bono weren't on board. This page would seem to agree.

Apparently Buffett described the incident in his book; perhaps someone with a copy can check.

Setlist Structure - Necessary??

Just reading this article makes me cringe. It just seems so amateurish and filled with bias.

For example, this line ""Fins", mostly performed during the first encore in recent years, is always preluded by the Jaws theme as a teaser, which gets the fans pumped" - which gets the fans 'pumped'? wtf ,this is an encyclopaedia, not some fan write up!

Given that his setlist does change from show to show, I can see your point. Then again, there does seem to be a notable structure in his performances. I agree that getting fans pumped is not the best way to describe the purpose of the Jaws Theme preluding it at every show. I don't find it necessary to remove it, but I agree it needs to be edited. How would you word the use of the Jaws Theme before Fins is played? It's certainly notable, with or without the setlist structure section. Also, learn how to sign your name. When reading the set structure section I was pleased to find information that was unexpected, but appreciated. The content is appropriate for Buffett's and similar musical groups who focus on live performance, and who have cultivated a large, loyal following. I did not know much about Jimmy Buffet and have never attended one of his concerts, so this is not coming from a fan. The information offered certainly has better encyclopedic value than many of the articles about current commercial interests 'with approved citations'. Keep it. Fasttimes68 deleted a substantial portion of the article, with the edit summary "(→‎"The Big 8" and standard songs: section is shit)". At this point discussion of this section with the editor is not possible as he has been banned from editing indefinitely. While the ban has nothing to do with this article, I feel the best action at this point is to restore the deleted section, and consider reviewing it for improvement or possible future removal. Perhaps the bar and restaurant franchising info currently in the music section should be moved to this section.

Why no mention of the Margaritaville that existed in Gulf Shores, Alabama in the early 1980s? Either this location, or possibly one in Key West, was the first real-life Margaritaville. Buffett's disdain for "Parrot Heads?"

I read or heard that Buffett is quoted as saying parrot heads should get a life, or something statement kind of negative about his Followers. Is that accurate? I can not find anything on the internet. I think it is from the 1990-s. I read today that he did not show up at his followers in key west at the big meeting they have down in the keys and it makes me think of what i read. Any iders? Wretched sentence

Kozlowski

I removed the sentence

Kozlowski was later convicted in New York state court and sentenced to prison for his role in various improprieties during his time as Tyco's CEO.

from ‎Controversy. As it stood it was just either cheap-shot sneer at a living person (Buffett), or a non-sequitur bcz it provides no info about the topic of either the article or the section. I do not assert that it can have no place in the article. I do not insist that it not appear in the article, but it must not without additional information that states, rather than insinuating, how it is relevant to controversy about Buffet. I.e., at a minimum, who has claimed Kozlowski's troubles or offenses are part of a controversy about JB, do they defend that claim, and if they don't, what do he or his defenders claim motivates the arguably indefensible critics/insinuators?

Big 8

For years I have directed PH’s to this page to explain the Big 8, 10, 12. Other than a passing reference “In an interview on KLBJ radio in Austin, TX, on May 2, 2013, Buffett humorously referred to the fact that they have to ‘play the ten that everyone wants, or else we'll get killed...’”, (this page “Big 8”), to my knowledge, there has never been a public acknowledgement by Bubba or the Reefer’s of the Big 8, 10 or 12. Having been ORDERED by my family not to purchase SYDKBH, Surprise! I finally received it for Christmas yesterday. In the final paragraph of the liner notes, JB says, “...steered by our fans love of songs beyond the ‘Big 12,...”, (Buffett, Jimmy; Liner Notes, SYDKBY, 2020) thereby clearly acknowledging for the first time what PH’s have known for years. The referenced article for the sentence that states Buffett's net worth as $950 million is from the Austin Chronicle (reference #11). That article lists his net worth as only (gulp!) $550 million. Austin connection

Seemingly omitted from Buffett's early performance history is the time he spent in Austin, Texas, usually in the company of Jerry Jeff Walker. I am a Florida native and a transplant to Texas, and I was well aware of the shared Walker-Buffett history before moving to Austin. During my time here, I have stumbled across several memorial plaques outside former live performance venues where Buffett and Walker performed together. I am pasting a link to a 2020 article from Texas Monthly, in which Buffett was interviewed about his long-time friendship with Walker and the impact Walker had on his early career and the evolution of his "Key West" sound. The article was published after Walker's death in 2020.

If this is the real Jimmy Buffett, then first, hi, big fan, my first concert was the Don't Stop the Carnival Tour in 1998.
