Record?

Why are the Chinese calling the Jiolong dives a record? The Trieste went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench at 11,521 meters in 1960. 76.102.1.193 (talk) 17:24, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Actually it's claimed to be a national record for the Chinese. However, the fact that Jiaolong, unlike Trieste, can navigate horizontally along the bottom of the sea bed has made the record more significant. Zanetu (talk) 10:06, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

I think this line is misleading, because it does not have the greatest depth range: "It has the greatest depth range of any manned research vehicle in the world, the only manned expeditions to have gone deeper were the dives of the Trieste bathyscaphe in 1960 and the dive of the Deepsea Challenger in 2012, both diving to Challenger Deep." Suggested change is "The Jiaolong has the greatest depth range of any Chinese deep sea submersible. Unlike previous submersibles, including the Trieste and Deepsea Challenger, Jiaolong can also navigate the seabed horizontally at a depth of 7000m". The line about Trieste and Challenger being "severely limited" is also not referenced in the linked article, so it looks like a subjective viewpoint.Andao79 (talk) 17:51, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Well, "being severely limited" is implied in the linked article, i.e. "However, these private vessels aren't capable of serious scientific exploration or extensive sample collection." Horizontal Navigation

Revision required: Deepsea Challenger (DCV 1) is equipped with horizontal thrusters and is capable of a horizontal velocity of 3 knots.
