The main body of this article deserves a reference to China. Just because Taiwan was occupied by the Japanese doesn't mean that the culture ceased to be Chinese. It is widely recognized as part of China.Brian0324 19:05, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was certainly part of Qing China when Maxwell went there, but it's best to steer well clear of the modern controversy regarding Taiwan and China. Using the name Formosa (linked to Taiwan, with Taiwan hidden from initial view) would have been a best all round way to handle the matter, avoiding all references to the words, China, Japan, or Taiwan. In those days, British missionaries talked about going out to Formosa. Readers can then look up Formosa as a separate topic. I would also be inclined to remove the Chinese version of his name in the lead. Just because there is a statue of him in Taiwan with his name in Chinese, doesn't mean that we have to concern ourselves with his Chinese name on English wikipedia. Besides, I don't know what kind of Chinese the statute inscription is using, but I do know that nowadays they use Mandarin there, but in the 19th century, they spoke Taiwanese. Steer clear of all those minefields. 109.152.249.9 (talk) 14:49, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
