Requested move 21 November 2018[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: No consensus to move. Both supporters and opposers suggested that there should be a page at JPG (disambiguation), but there is no consensus on whether JPEG (disambiguation) should be moved there or not. JPEG (disambiguation)JPG (disambiguation) – this actually disambiguates "JPG" and not "JPEG" -- 70.51.45.46 (talk) 06:06, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:54, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • It disambuates both. It might be worth considering changing the target of JPG, which is currently a redirection page to JPEG, to this page. However, there are more than a few pages that link to JPG. Richard 08:49, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • It does not. Only two entries are valid "JPEG" which does not make a valid disambiguation page (we delete disambiguation pages on that basis, one primary use and one secondary use with the disambiguation page sitting at "X (disambiguation)" ). All the other entries are only JPG, which are not valid JPEG values. Both values of JPEG are valid entries on a JPG disambiguation page, none of the only JPG entries are proper disambiguation targets on a JPEG disambiguation page. -- 70.51.45.46 (talk) 10:36, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Suppport move, adjusting hatnotes on the JPEG article to point to the Joint Photographic Experts Group article and to JPG (disambiguation). PamD 09:58, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The only thing that isn't a partial title match in the form of a little-used abbreviation is JPG (magazine), which works better as a hatnote. This page should simply be deleted as unnecessary.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 10:28, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose but create new page JPG (disambiguation). Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 13:07, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose this disambiguates both JPEG and JPG; the primary-topic article is at JPEG. power~enwiki (π, ν) 04:50, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • That "JPEG" is the primary topic article's spelling is really immaterial in the discussion. Why do we have {{redirect}} if this isn't the case? {{redirect|JPG|other uses}} -- -- and there are only 2 uses on the disambiguation page that are "JPEG", there are 4 uses that are only "JPG" and not "JPEG". The two uses that are JPEG are also JPG, so this is clearly "JPG" -- 70.51.45.46 (talk) 12:06, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Jefferson Proving Ground and JPG by Gaultier are valid targets as well, not partial title matches. The JPEG ambiguity can be handled by a hatnote, and the JPG ambiguity by this page under its new name. -- JHunterJ (talk) 18:05, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
