Anode / Cathode Nomenclature[edit]

negative end is an anode, positive is a cathode. nor does a current create a voltage potential - a voltage potential creates a current.

Negative anode and positive cathode refers to a galvanic cell. Electrophoresis is more correctly equivalent to an electrolytic cell where the cathode is the negative electrode, and the anode is the positive. A current passing through a resistive medium creates a potential difference. Of course an external emf is required to drive that current.
Reference 3 is not about isoelectric focussing, but proposes the distribution of protein in an pH gradient without an imposed electric field.96.54.53.165 (talk) 20:38, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
