Might I contextualize? I'd love to say, "Like the plays by George Lillo and Richard Steele being acted at nearly the same time, this play attempts to focus on Christian morality enacted on a family or household scale." Or I could even add, "It is one of a number of plays of the time that sought to appeal to an increasingly bourgeoise audience in the theatres."
