Australian Aboriginal initiations[edit]

This whole article needs, I believe a lot of work. It should have a more general introduction which distinguishes between ceremonies of initiation of adolescents as part of the whole spiritual and ritual life of tribal societies and other types of "initiation ceremonies" which may or may not have a religious/spiritual basis. It is a big subject and perhaps should be split into more than one article.

I have, with some hesitation, added a very brief note on Australian Aboriginal male initiation rites but I am not authorised to speak in more detail about them - and not at all on women's ceremonies. Perhaps someone who is properly authorised could expand on these notes with constant regard and respect for the traditions and the Law? John Hill 10:52, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient Egyptian Initiation[edit]

I was reading the book, "Initiation" by Elizabeth Haich. It is a wonderful piece of work by this author and throws great insight into the initiation process followed in the Temples of Ancient Egypt by the head-priest. The central theme in the book is that of an ancient Egyptian princess who was granted initiation in the Sacred School. The lessons included exercises in meditation, concentration, body and sense control and telepathy. Also included was instruction regarding the various aeons of the earth. I seem to remember seeing this book. Isn't it based on past life memories or something like that? If so, it's probably not suitable for inclusion in the article, because it doesn't fall into the category of what most people would consider "verifiable". Fuzzypeg ★ 21:14, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I agree with the "verifiable" point you make from Wiki's perspective. But at the same time, when I read that book, I learned a lot about the concept of Initiation, though it may look like it is one person's POV. And if Wiki's purpose is one of knowledge and education, which I hope it is, I feel we should at-least include some statement referring this book within the topic of Initiation, as this may give some pointers to the readers towards better educating themselves. In the past, I've found that I have access to plenty of very useful information that I can't get added to Wikipedia. Wikipedia as an encyclopedia can only incorporate very specific types of information. I have no doubt that the book is great, but I'm not sure how we could include it. If some scholarly source mentioned Haich's book, perhaps in regards to modern views, or contemporary occult views on initiation, then we might be able to include it in some way. Basically, we need to establish that it's notable and relevant to the subject. We certainly can't promote the book as such, since that would breach the neutral point of view policy. Proposed merger of Diksha into this article[edit]

Strong oppose: I am not sure why the nominator would make such a suggestion for this merger?? Hinduism is not a cult and is the third largest religion in the world and all aspects of Hinduism are widely covered, relevant and important to be documented. If Diksha should be merged into this article, then I dont see a reason why Bar and Bat Mitzvah, Baptism, Confirmation etc should have a separate article.
