What is the bulge on the trunk for?[edit]
If it isn't for water storage, then what is it? I just saw an old drawing (taken from H.W.Bates, The Naturalists on the River Amazon, 1910) where the trunks of the bottle palms are long and slender, perhaps 20 feet tall, with a 3 feet section at the middle that widens to more than 3 times the normal trunk width.
