I changed 'international' to 'academic' because 'international' is irrelevant (or are we to assume that all internationals are academics?). 160.39.243.156 03:55, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to move this page to Hume (disambiguation). When somebody types in Hume or links to [[Hume]], in this encyclopedia, then they are going to want David Hume, not a rual municipality in New South Wales. If you disagree just move it back. -- Mac Davisญƛ. 06:38, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry to disagree but looking at Hume (disambiguation), I recognise some "Hume" articles and notable people but have never heard of David Hume. Archbishop Hume is quite notable, while Final Fantasy fans would regard Hume (race) as important. You can't satisfy everyone, that's why we have disambiguation pages after all. I'm gonna vote to change this back, but wouldn't want to fall into any kind of revert war. I just don't see David Hume being that significant. — CuaHL 20:32, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • While I have indeed heard of David Hume, any twerp who typed in Hume and expects not to go to a disambiguation page where other things called Hume are listed, probably is not looking for the philospher who was brighter than that. They would of course find David Hume listed on the dab page. The more precise title doesn't worry me. Have any double redirects been fixed? Could the movers of this page please confirm?--A Y Arktos 19:04, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Having looked at some of the pages linked to Hume, they certainly frequently refer to the philosopher. All that means is that some of the editing of the philosphy articles is poor quality; any editor with a little bit of experience in the wikipedia would know the article would be called David Hume, and thus I conclude philosophy article editors are merely too lazy to put in the piped link. Although I have no objections, I also see no reason to have Hume redirect to Hume (diambiguation). I will move it back.--A Y Arktos 20:08, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • This move revert will require administrator intervention--A Y Arktos 20:12, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't think it's about "laziness" so much as the fact that all philosophers refer to the guy simply as "Hume," and we would certainly assume that "Hume" redirects to him. He's one of the 3 or 4 most important philosophers in the Western tradition, but I barely knew his first name was David.

Done. I'm not sure it really mattered, as long as Hume redirected to the disambiguation page not the philosopher. But IMO admins should do anything within policy if consensus requests it, so I have.

Agree about laziness and piped links, mea culpa on occasions. The whole idea of disambiguation pages is that wikilinks to them should be both rare and mostly temporary (the exceptions being the disambig notices at the tops of disambiguated articles).

The redirect from Hume (disambiguation) seems quite as harmless as it is pointless, so I'm leaving it there. Maybe we should even update it a few times to give it a history, which may prevent a recurrence. Not quite sure. Andrewa 10:14, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have to strongly endorse changing the redirect back to David Hume. If someone doesn't know his first name is David, they are likely to be confused by the disambiguation page. It's hardly an accident that 9 of the first 10 google results on "Hume" are for David Hume. Other uses and personalities seem minor in comparison. The Hume race in Final Fantasy for instance isn't even mentioned on the page cited above. --Beaker342 (talk) 00:25, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I also strongly endorse changing the redirect back to David Hume. He is widely considered one of the most important philosophers ever, even more so in English (see, for instance, Edward Craig's Philosophy from the Oxford University Press). And he is widely referred to by his last name so it is very likely that people will search him through just "Hume". I'm bolding his name for now but please reconsider this. --elzr (talk) 07:54, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I kept hearing talk about this "Hume" guy, and so decided to quickly look up who was being referred to... getting the disambiguation page was quite disconcerting. I was prepared to look into each article about a person, and see which one seemed to fit the context better... Fortunately, David Hume was written in bold, and that wasn't necessary. So, while I think a disambiguation page will be disconcerting to those who know the philosopher simply as "Hume," the bold on his name is all that's really needed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.175.164.61 (talk) 15:17, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why is only one name in bold? Bias much? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.0.54.202 (talk) 02:54, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HumeHume (disambiguation) – Redirect Hume to David Hume per WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT. Googling "hume" without personal search bias gives David Hume. Also see the page views of the five most popular pages linked to from this page during the past 90 days (all the other pages linked to have on average fewer than 100 views per day). Notice that the two most popular pages other than David Hume don't even contain the word "Hume" in their article titles: One is a movie that came out this year that for a single day peaked at two thousand views, and the other is a place name in Final Fantasy XII. Only David Hume has over one thousand views every day. The primary topic for Hume is clearly David Hume. Ailenus (talk) 14:56, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose on the one hand I have to commend the idea, usually it's a piece of anime or something else ephemeral which gets proposed for WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. However Hume is such a common surname and place name this isn't going to help most readers. Sorry. In ictu oculi (talk) 17:05, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you for your comment. It's ok if this RM fails, but at least I'm going to move David Hume to the top of the page in a style similar to that of Jefferson per MOS:DABPRIMARY, to which I hope no one will object. The rationale is the page statistics mentioned in nom, added to which is that I cannot find another person or place named Hume with half the average daily page views as David Hume. Ailenus (talk) 17:30, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Opppose. David Hume may be well-known to those few who have heard of him, but IMO he isn't a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. As it stands now, links to Hume will be found by User:DPL bot, and WP:DPL members will sooner or later fix them. A move would guarantee that David Hume will slowly but inexorably collect bad links about other people and (more likely) the various places called "Hume", which will be very unlikely to be noticed and fixed. (If you have a few minutes to spare, have a look at what links in to Esplanade, which is a real shocker.)
BTW I fully endorse the "most commonly" bit at the top of the DAB page. It really does help readers find what they might be looking for. Narky Blert (talk) 22:18, 2 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
