Former department stores in Cumbernauld and Salisbury[edit]

The House of Fraser 'Directors' Report and Statement of Accounts for the period ended January 1976' list of 'Retail Outlets' includes branches in Cumbernauld (Arnotts) and Salisbury (Blooms). There are also 3 Arnotts stores listed in Glasgow (aswell as Dalys, Frasers and McLaren) at this date. AndrewSE19 (talk) 00:21, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have added cumbernauld and salisbury blooms back in. Cumbernauld is also recalled on a facebook page about Cumbernauld shopping centre (it cant be used as its users recollection and as chat shows they are arguing over the name of the chinese!). Blooms found, reference on HoF archive in pictures section. Arnotts is quite hard, as cannot find any reference link to this. The only ref is what you have read the HoF director report. They were probably converted from the other stores listed, but we need proof of which ones were.Davidstewartharvey (talk) 05:52, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It is hard to pin down the Arnotts (and Bairds!) stores.

If I recall correctly from what I have read, one of the Arnotts in Glasgow (apart from the first Jamaica Street store) was in the Sauchiehall Street Shopping Centre but I have no idea as yet about the third store. AndrewSE19 (talk) 12:42, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lakeside Branch closure Jan 2024[edit]

Is a separate article required for Frasers?[edit]

Barkers Kingston[edit]

@andrewse19 Hi. You recently added a former branch of Barkers, Kingston upon Thames to the list of former branches. I don't think was ever actually a department store. The evidence on the HOF archive says it was a former branch of Zeeta & Co. Zeeta was a chain of bakery and grocery store purchased by Barkers which was sold after HOF purchased John Barker & Co. There is no mention of it on the HOF page for John Barker & Co. I did find an antique barometer sold as John Barker & Co, Kingston but upon looking at the actual pictures of the article it was a typo in the catalogue as it clearly stated Kensington. I know Zeeta had branches across the south east, as Southend had a Zeeta bakery in the 1970s in the old Dixon department store. I have not seen any other mentions of a branch in Kingston. Hi David,

The Barkers store in Kingston at least sold furniture, beds and pillows and carpets. These are featured in an advert for the store in 1960 (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/BL/0003899/19600616/011/0011?browse=False).

I had thought the store closed in 1964 but I have just now found the branch amongst a list of House of Fraser stores in 1965 (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/BL/0000566/19650425/052/0011?browse=False). AndrewSE19 (talk) 15:30, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
