Modern History[edit]

The history in the article is very good, but there's very little on history in the modern era, particularly from the 19th century onwards. This could do with adding, or even renaming the aricle "History of Durham (pre 19th Century)", and keeping the core text but removing references to the 19th century onwards. On the contrary, I find the history astonishingly thin. As for being 'isolated'from Norman rebellion, the entire region was devastated by the Conqueror - and was close to the front line of the centuries-long Border war with Scotland. By my reckoning, virtually every English ruler from the Conqueror to Cromwell(except for the Tudors)was present in Durham - all the Edwards, for example, King John, Henrys III, IV, VI and VII. Richard III, Queen Philippa, Queen Margaret and so on. So was Charles I.

Scots monarchs like Malcolm III, David I, David II (captured near Durham in 1346) were also there. So was William Wallace after his capture - and Robert the Bruce. So was James I.

No mention of Domesday Book; the Durham Ox; the Durham Shorthorn; the Heathery Burn Bronze Age find; language; local dishes; Wolsingham has the oldest agricultural show in the country; the lead-mining industry etc. etc.

The North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (not mentioned) is now a geological Europark, the only one in Britain

Cultural figures like W.H. Auden (the North Pennines was his (mutterland', and painters like Turner are omitted.

Request to move article[edit]

The article discusses the historic county of Durham and has no references to any "County Durham"s that came into existence in the late 19th century and onwards. Therefore I have repeated the text at Historic county of Durham with a view to removing this if no objections are made. Logoistic (talk) 23:51, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
